Curious

Talking to a local charter operator this week, he made an interesting statement......that the Sambos at the aggregations hit jigs NOT as a food source, but purely out of aggression - territorially.

Having little experience with this, am curious what others thoughts are, expecially when relating it to jigging for other species such as Dhuies & Reds.

Agree from a demersal perspective

Wed, 2008-01-23 08:26

I wrote an article about this a couple of years ago, where I used the analogy of a telemarketer ringing you up every five minutes, p!sses you off doesn't it. Well in times when the drift turns to zero I have had good success jigging the silstar jigem rigs because the "in their face" bouncing around tends to intice them to strike.

Here is an excerpt from that mag article:

The Midday Shut Down
Summer time is fantastic for fishing, the morning Easterly gives you a nice drift and in the afternoon when the sea breeze kicks in all hell breaks loose. But for an hour or two in between it’s like someone turned off the switch and all the fish go to sleep. So what do you do then?

Just imagine fish are like us humans, you have just finished work (chasing up a feed) and sit down on your favourite couch (rock or piece of overhanging coral…get the picture?) and you really are looking forward to a rest. You finally get comfortable when the phone rings and its one of those pesky telemarketers. “Hi I am calling from ABC Finance and we are asking people if they would like to save money on their home loan” You retort quickly but politely, “Sorry no, actually I work as a finance broker and so you can’t get me a better deal than I have already, I’m not interested, but thanks for your call, bye”. You settle back down on the couch with a smirk, get comfy again, and before you know it the phone rings yet again “Hi my name is Wayne (said in a broad Punjabi accent)” …”I am calling to tell you that you have won a new mobile phone”. “No Wayne I haven’t won a bloody phone and you’re real name isn’t Wayne now piss off and leave me alone.” Thud! You slam the phone down and retreat to the couch, this time the brow is furrowed and you are in no mood to smile. “Brrring brrring” You leap out of your chair and lift the receiver “Hi its…” you cut them short and leap down their throat, “You little !@#%$*&^(**)(****%&^##&^#@&^ don’t you ever call this place again” …….silence……you yell down the phone again “So what have you got to say to that” ….. silence…..then “Andy is that you……its your mother-in-law, is Silvia there” By then it’s too late you are already hooked, you turn to your wife. “Honey it’s for you”, you picture yourself lying bleeding on the deck, “quick somebody ikijimi me and put me out of my misery.”

Well that’s exactly what you should be doing when the bite goes quiet or you have no wind for a drift. Become that pesky telemarketer and shove that jig in the face of those fish that are trying to rest. Impart some action on your offering and it just might be enough to generate some interest. You will be surprised at the response as they lash out at your lure out of anger rather than hunger. Some great lures to use in times like these are the Silstar Jig-em rigs. They look like small squids and have a great little action in the water as you pick them up and drop them down. I’ve caught heaps of breaksea cod, harlequin and even dhuie’s using this technique. Adapt, change, then reap the rewards.

Good Theory Jody - Great Analogy Andy

Wed, 2008-01-23 09:29

Thats is a VERY interesting theory Jody - sure makes a LOT of sense now that it's been raised!

When we fish for any species, various conditions have them on, then off the bite - down here, the best fishing is in the AM, by 13:00 or so, usually, but not always, things go quiet.

I'm just wondering if, amongst those that have considerable Sambo jigging experience, you've had the opportunity to observe if this on/off bite situation applies or not. If not, that is, the action is atypically consistent, this would lend itself to credence on the 'telemarketer' theory.

Andy - GREAT anaology mate - insightful and very funny! OH so have we all been in that position - even with silent numbers!

Let's hope the Sambo's never get together and create the piscatorial equivalent of a 'no call' register. :)))

IMO!

Sambo's Jody are often "schooling" up so they hit jigs for a competative reason's, also they hit it as aggression and yes food would be on the list also but down the bottom of such list!

Bottom species however certainly dont have the schooling/competative issue (in general) so aggression and food is my pick!

Thanks for your answers guys (and Andy, you are priceless, great analogy. LOL)
Yeah, it does seem to make a lot of sense. Will have to test the theory and try making some fish very very angry.

I do whatever the little voices tell me to do

Just treat them (Sambos) as males and (once your autmatic instincts cut in) you'll clean up!

I always run a few rods when

Thu, 2008-01-24 03:41

I always run a few rods when quiet ,and yes if the baits are not getting touched i also giggle my baits to get fishes attension but they seem to always leave the rod that you jiged alone and grab the one next to it.
I also had a problem with telemarketers ,but they dont ring me anymore ,i had one that rang me ,and after a asked her a few questions about her mother and her self ,and some sorts of postions ,she turns around to me and says you cant talk to me like that ,then i turned around to her and said who rang who you @##$%@# S#%$ ,cant believe she hung up on me ,guess she wasnt into the mother daughter thing .
