Cyclone question

Normally Cyclones travel from east to west , yet the new one that’s just formed off the NT coast is predicted to track west to east . Why is this so ? . I’ve scoured the net and I’m not having any joy finding an answer , this is one for the Fishwrecked brains trust to enlighten me . Thanks people

Jet Stream

As the cyclone curves south it comes under the increasing influence of the west to east jet stream causing it to change direction and head in a S easterly heading.

 Nothing normal about

Nothing normal about cyclones they are unpredictable as history shows. I developed cyclone procedures fpr major mining companies some years ago and studied a huge amount of history and came to realise you will get a 2-3 day window in predicting direction at best. I thought what was amazing with all the history is that more cat 5 cyclones have passed over the Onslow area than anywhere in the world.  Great place to build an LNG facility.

Apparently if there is no jet streams or high/ low pressures to steer the cyclone it becomes like a spinning top which can go in any direction.

Main factors at the moment

Bom has loads of info and goes into good detail.

Im currently off Broome and have been out here for almost all the cyclones in the last 3 months.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the major fluctuation in tropical weather on weekly to monthly timescales. The MJO can be characterised as an eastward moving 'pulse' of cloud and rainfall near the equator that typically recurs every 30 to 60 days.

Equatorial Rossby wave activity, which was likely the most significant tropical wave associated with tropical cyclone Marcus, remains present across northern Australia. In its current location, the Rossby wave, a westward moving tropical pulse of low pressure, is reinforcing cross-equatorial flow into Australian longitudes and provides favourable conditions for enhanced tropical convection and tropical cyclone formation in the region.

Lastly this year we are having a mild La-Nina = warmer water temps = above average cyclones for the season.

Check out the video blogs on this site - https://www.ozcyclonechasers.com.au/

This should answer all your questions.

The blog from the 19 March gave some interesting scenarios depending on where the cyclone actually formed, and in hindsight are remarkably accurate.
