Danny Green fight
Submitted by Dale on Wed, 2010-07-21 21:37
What a total gyp, Paul Briggs has gone down 15 seconds into the 1st round with a punch that didn't even brush his hair and came up all wobbly when untouched, WTF happened there? Danny was dumb founded and spent the rest of the time apologising to the crowd. Was shown in our wet mess up here in Dampier, glad I didn't pay for a ticket or bought in on Fox.
Cheers
Dale

Bad name
It's shite like this that gives boxing a bad name. Very rare these days that you see a classic bout, more about money and fluff and less about the quality of the pugilism.

I don't get it
I love Danny Green and think he is a great fighter but I don't understand how boxers these days get to pick who they want to defend their title against?
Or am I missing something here?
I would have thought that the organisation that the belt is from would pick the challengers.
I haven't watched the fight but it certainly sounds like the whole fan base has been let down by this one.
Danny must be ropable as he is a smart man and would realise that despite a very quick paycheck this time, a succession of quick no-contest bouts only puts the punters off as well as the TV coverage people.
Lets hope he picks a tougher opponent next time.
Cheers

Thats just stupid quick,
Thats just stupid quick, first hit essentially.
If you look really closely at the video, you'll see that Danny did actually connect. Briggs ducked and moved in, but it still hit him on the forehead, then as everything kept moving it went over his head, so not as much of a glance as it first seems. In that video, at around 2:30 if you watch closely you can see Brigg's head bounce back a bit, so the punch would have jarred his head a bit, bit like a whiplash effect. Doesnt look like much but if you've ever had one of those punches at the wrong time, it can be pretty disorientating, a bit different to a normal punch to the head. You can see him hold his head straight away, fitting if he was mildly concussed or similar, then start to fall over as he clutches his head which is consistent. Could still be faking it though and taken a dive. You think he woulda waited for a proper punch though (but I guess if there was some 30 second thing...). Will be interesting to see what the organisers and doctors say.
Still, you'd think a professional boxer would be able to deal with it though.

If thats the case, it came
If thats the case, it came across wrong. Basically am saying from what I saw, it was an actual hit, not just just a glance, but its not really an excuse for him to go down and was still a crap fight. I.e. the punch was probably harder than it looked, but he still shouldnt have gone down from it.
The last sentence should really be before the "could have been faking it bit".

What a disgrace
What a disgrace ...supposedly a 1st round knockout bet dropped from $11 to $1.70 shortly before the the start ...

IBO have computer rankings
http://www.iboboxing.com/rankings/200.html
Why then do the world championship fights end up being with people not in the top 10 ranked fighters?
Was it always like this?

Nope, just too many ego's
Nope, just too many ego's these days and far to many "so called World bodies" so who is the real champ? IBF, WBF, WBC, IBC???.....
I think we should just let Green and Mudine keep fighting each other till they in walking-frames...lol
At least those two can talk the talk and fight the fight... like them or not, they the best two in the ball park.

No Respect !
I used to Think Danny Green was a credit to the sport and that he displayed good judgement in retiring at the right time and while on top
..........unfortunately since his come back , he is just looking for the next pay check.
Why anybody would part with money to watch a these guys stage a fight is beyond me.

One thing Green supporters
One thing Green supporters seem to forget about is that Danny announced his retirement about 4 weeks before his scheduled fight against Argentinian Hugo Garay.
It was to be Greens' first defence of his world title against mandatory challenger Garay.
Now, question is....what was Danny's real reason for going into retirement ?
Lack of interest with boxing, wanted to to retire with a title, or not fight ready ?
Then to come back 12 months later what is that saying ?
I admire Danny for who he is and what he has done (prior to retirement), but his last 5 fights have been circumspect.
Are all his challengers hand selected by Green and his management ?
His fight record is won 30 - lost 3
Maybe he should consider a rematch against Markus Beyer (not sure if has retired yet), as Beyer holds 2 of Greens scalps !

Bring back "Aussie" Joe Bugner and George Foreman Lol
As fat and as old as they are, a Bugner v George Foreman fight would have been better than last night's version of the Australian diving championships.

Green v Briggs
Its time for Danny Green to stop fighting- retirees, bums, nobodies etc.
I would never pay to watch a Green fight...I lied, I paid to see Mundine make him look stupid. It's time for him to step up and challenge some quality opponents apart from washed up old timers, Briggs hadn't had a pro fight in years, he waltzed up at the weigh in 3kg over, did anybody expect anything else???
What a joke, this has done Green no good!

Similar...
...to the RJJ fight...a knockout scored in the first round with what really didn't look like a solid punch. Either Green is capable of KO'ing people by doing little more than looking at them, or there's a few guys merely showing up for the paycheck.
