Decent quality hooks

Lost a few really decent fish today 8/0 hooks straightening out. The Chinese eBay hooks just aren’t up to scratch. Can people please recommend a good brand for hooks that aren’t too exxy? Many thanks

have always served me well...not too expensive but good quality. Worthwhile spending a bit more on good quality tackle i reckon. Mustad, Black magic and so on all good . Shame to loose a good fish when you skimped on hooks...

I got sick of how expensive some hooks are

Thu, 2020-12-31 16:30

So I took the tip from LJ and buy mine by the box from Taylor Marine in Henderson ...... pro hooks built like proverbial brick outhouses but NOT at premium prices .....can't remember the name of them but LJ might chime in and let us both know.

Cheap hooks are a false economy IMO.

I will not use Gamakatsu hooks ever ! Had too may break in the middle of the bend . Only use owners now , yes they are expensive but in Perth you very rarely loose tackle so i don't mind the extra dollars . I also don't have time to try different brands to find an equivalent for cheaper or be wanting to loose big fish..

mustad demon circle hooks

Fri, 2021-01-01 17:45

I use mustad demon hooks after snapping multiple 7/0 owner hooks on only where you would expect the 15lb line to break first. The Mustads do bend open a bit under extreme load, but it is better than snapping off imo.

I do get a quite a few snags

Fri, 2021-01-01 17:56

I do get a quite a few snags while drifting in the metro area on lumpy ground so at $10 a rig can get costly. I’ll just have to try a few of the suggestions listed cheers

Mustad Tainawa

Although they started getting produced in China and the quality dropped. Not sure if that has changed after bad feedback.

I'v still been using some bought years ago so havnt bought new.

Used widely from charter boats to rec's.

Mustad Demon have done me well.

Fri, 2021-01-01 19:20

I have regularly  used the 8/0 with locked drag on 80lb braid when live baiting dmersals, never had an issue. For the heavier duty stuff, Taylor Marine have the Three Yachts hooks and line. A mate in Exmouth does a lot of deep dropping, swears by them. the 14/0's are much sharper than the equivilant Mustads. Smaller sizes are good, too.

Tarpons pure and simple, Gamkatsu never again as I had one straighten out on me up north with a big Red and nearly lost. Sometimes mix the rigs up with Owners.

Mustad demon circle hooks...or Owner saltwater Live bait

Sat, 2021-01-02 19:57

I watched on in horror as a mates ~12kg Pinkie broke his gamakatsu 6-0 hook in half. Was not a pleasant experience for either of us lol.

Have never straightened out these hooks.

Cheap hooks?

Tue, 2021-01-05 09:15

Not to be too blunt but I just don't get why you would bother with cheap hooks.  What does the expense of hooks amount to compared to the total cost of fishing?

Tue, 2021-01-05 10:11

I use Jarvis walker hooks for snapper on 20 and 30lb and circles 6/0 for bottom fish on 50lb and I know when they will bend and give way 90% of the time. No hooks left in fish. I can’t justify spending the big bucks on hooks unless I’m targeting trophies. Always the potential for a once in a lifetime fish while you have a bait in the water but bringing up a small family, sacrifices need to be made somewhere!!

No doubt I’ve lost some big fish that had me cursing cheap hooks and vowed never to use them again! I’ve had big gammas bend, black magic circles that consistently broke off at the tip, only ones that have been good are mustard. Demons are good and big reds suicide. Can’t pay owner prices
