Deck wash makes radio turn off
Submitted by Simo_ on Fri, 2016-04-01 05:27
I've just had a new deck wash put in, when I turn it on it makes the radio turn off. Any ideas on how to stop this.
Also when I start the boat motor the furuno 585 turns off.

Initial thought on the
Initial thought on the second issue is that the voltage is dropping too much when the battery is loaded up by cranking the motor. As too how to fix it, im not too sure. First place to start may be to check your terminals arent loose. I have a mate who is an auto sparkie if you need one.

Do you run two cranking
Do you run two cranking batteries? If money isnt too much of an issue consider replacing one with a deep cycle (about $225 depending on size) and run your electrics off that so they are isolated from the cranking battery and not affected by voltage drops.

Def voltage issue possibly.
Def voltage issue possibly. Could be caused by many things
Loose terminals
Old batteries
Wiring
Etc etc
Bit more info on batteries and how its wired. Some electronics are less tolerant to volt drop.

I wouldnt have thought the
I wouldnt have thought the deck wash would affect the voltage enough to affect the radio so i reckon there is definitely an issue with a connection or your battery could be close to packing it in.

When my battery/s were on
When my battery/s were on their way out the 585 would turn off as the voltage was too low. Not sure about the radio issue though. Good luck, hope its a simple fix!

Sounds simple enough, like said above def voltage drop. I just installed a new battery isolater in my boat and behind was the main earth connection to the boat. It was encrusted in salt corrosion etc. Gave it a good clean up. Things like that get to stage where if not noticed one day the boat won't start and you'll be pulling your hair out trying to find the issue. Maybe something else to check Simo.

electrolysis
unless you like electrolysis Andy, disconnect wiring from your hull and run your grounds back to the negative on your battery, current flow through your hull should be avoided.
I hear they have been doing that on the newer quintrex's, the older one's like I used to have were not using the hulls as a ground. I cant understand why a boat builder would do this either
send me a msg if you need more info

I asked myself the same
I asked myself the same thing. Mine is all earthed back to the negative battery terminal and therefore grounded to the engine block.

Radio would only be drawing an amp or 2 in standby mode, so for that to drop out, a lot of power is being rediverted when the pump kicks in, and pumps don't draw a real lot either. Check all of the above and also check your earths.

Alot of larger boats
ground out the radio to the hull to avoid interference from engine revs. Common practice. It will only cause electrolyisis if it gets immersed in water.

Feel free to drop your boat
Feel free to drop your boat (or battery) down to us and we can load test the battery for you Simo. It will eliminate that for starters. Open tomorrow till 12 or call us to arrange a time. All above are good points, sometimes hard to diagnose exactly without seeing/testing in person though, could be a simple fix but if it's just started after the deck wash pump install that's the place to start looking first.

It obviously never use to do this? No ones mentioned a dodgy fitup job. Simo go get your batteries tested first then if they test ok l would be taking back to whoever installed it and getting them to sort it out free of charge.
