Deep Drop Report

After a couple of years of filtering through old posts on this site and a few PM’s to Ryan to help build our knowledge on this form of fishing I thought I would share some of the results. The most recent was yesterday with the weather looking ok, the Demersal Ban approaching and a brand new jignesis rod from ocean side tackle to try we had to go. A 20kg grey band jumped on the new rod to christen it and the parabolic action did make it easier on the back.

Below sounder shots are on a furuno 587 with a TM260 tranny. In one shot you can see a double header of pinkies coming up off the bottom. Special thanks to Ryan, Reece and Harro for the information from your posts over the years and the questions you openly answer when asked have gone a long way towards helping us get results.

Also thanks to the Furuno and Oceanside team for the deep drop talk the other week it was a very informative night. We still have a long way to go before we hit fish consistently and conquer all the deep drop species but after many trips the “code” is slowly being cracked.

Nice one mate! What is the max depth you have found the TM260 still capable of marking fish in?

Impressive hauls there mate. You've got the sounder looking good. I've got the same set up just need to find a few more fish & make it look like that. Do you have any trouble cranking the TVG up to high. When out at similar depths on Monday could only go to medium, high would clutter the screen completely. Medium still worked mind you. Just interested

Gday Stevo we have marked and caught the fish on the sounder up to 280m. We have marked what we think are fish up to 400m but have not pulled any quality fish of these spots. From what we have seen the sounder incrementaly fades out after 300m for discremenating fish however we still see the profile of the bottom up to 600m.

Gday Kirky we always have TVG on high out deep, we get clear soundings less than 5 knots but after that it will start to fill with clutter.

Banka, I have had mixed luck with the deep drop. I have been out and caught pinkies on very similar soundings to what you have shown, but unfortunately no greyband. Do you find that they are in roughly the same areas? Also, I have a deep jig 500 t-curve, would you say the extra money spent on the Jignesis was worth it?
Some good photos of some pretty impressive fish there Banka. Let me know if you need a deckie one day ;)

 G'day Bessey

We have caught plenty of greyband off the same spot we get pinkies, both here and in Jurien so keep trying.

As for the rod it depends on your budget, I am convinced a parabolic rod is the way to go wether it is a jignesis or a more affordable FWA extreme rod which we also use on another set up is up to you I went the jignesis for the quality as I intend to be getting plenty of use from it.

As for needing a deckie I am sure we can sort something out afer the ban if you are free

luke yeah mate deep sea flat head from the same depths as the GB

Thanks, i'll keep hunting for the elusive greyband. Have you just got the greyband sussed, or have you managed to get into some Hapuka/bass/trevalla???

Looking forward to catching up after the ban. Thanks mate

Good to see the hard work and time you guys have put into finding fish and understanding your sounder finaly paid off.  Well done.  In time, i'm sure you'll find the other species too.
