Deep drop sinkers

Hey guys

This is one for all the deep drop guns out there. Im off to exy in just over a month and keen to have a go at the rubys.

I have some 50mm round bar that i intend to cut into sections for sinkers but i have no idea on what weight i need?

Has anyone done this before with round bar and if so what weights do you use? I wouldnt mind making up a few different sizes for depth ie. 100-150m and 200-300m.

Cheers

Kyle

Hey Kyle, mate im up there 3rd june for 2 weeks as well...keen on chasing a few rubys this year. we deep drop heaps down sth. 2.5 kg's seems pretty excessive for the standard electric reels. we use truck axles cut to required gms, similar to round bar I guess. we use 1.2-1.4 kg for 120-200 m, then upgrade to 1.5-1.7kg for 200-420m. like all things though, depend son the tides/drift on the day. I will say it is great to have a few different weighs though..be great to hear how you go, we will trying nth and sth of Tantas

Kyle, as others have said good to have variety. Last Oct we where lucky enough to get good weather in Exmouth plenty of reds on the 300m line heaviest we used was 50oz !! Had bigger for backup but not required in our week.
Good luck we did best South of Tantas.
Giving coral bay a go in june would be wrapped with 50oz again.

We are trying the deep drop again in Coral Bay over 2 weeks in Jul/Aug. Not much success over the past 2 years - would really appreciate to hear how you go and what areas/depths you fish.

cheers

Do you have plenty of sinkers Bruce? I have some 60 mm round bar and can cut up and make you a few if you wanted? I'm gonna see how far out the deeper water is at Gnaraloo and maybe have a crack ourselves.

Cheers guys great info.

Rowanhill - we get into town on the 3rd June as well. Do you usually head up in june? We usually head up in april/may but got nailed by the second cyclone last year so heading up later this year.

This will be our first time having a go at deep drop so theres going to be alot of recon and learning what works (or doesnt...).

at gnaraloo it's about  33 nm to the 200's and around 38 to the 300m mark. Plus driving around to find ground you would want a good day!

We stay at the Exmouth villas off Maidstone cres... only a short crawl to the potshot.

I've got a PE8 jigging setup and want to have a crack at dropping some jigs on them but the old man will be dropping baits on manual. Its easy enough in 100-150m but i think it will change his mind to electrics in 150m+.

Used 2kg and 2.5kg in 400m+ off tantabiddi recently

sinkers went "straight" down under the boat and we held bottom easily which was ideal

still got a massive 200m+ bow in line from only minimal current thou, so to me that suggests much less weight I would have had drift plus current/bow to deal with.

I'm definitely still learning the deep drop stuff but 2kg seemed about right for what we were doing.

Also we got some pipe with a shackle thru one end and a bolt/wingnut in the other.

We could fit 2 or 3 x 24or32oz sinkers in it, which allowed us to add and delete weight to suit the depth if required, without having numerous different size very large sinkers kicking around. Maybe you could do with you bar...
