My Dhuie catches have certainly improved. I suspect that snappermiles is right about the cray fisherman but our strict bag limits & closed season must help a bit too. Also we are all more conscientious about returning undersise fish, useing drop weights etc. I think it all helps.
With 400 plus boats not selling 10 snapper and 10 dhuies to the pub 3 times a week that fisheries have no record of it most certainly will improve.Got fuck all to do with banning the average rec fisho for 2 months.Best thing they ever did was ban cray boats from even carrying hooks, IMO.
I know it was probably a throwaway line, but I worked on around 7 different crayboats in the midwest/Abrolhos and none caught/sold any demersal fish commercially. While it was 10 years and longer ago there was very little interest in it. I know some smaller boats at the islands got into it to boost decky pays but at the time the return from demersal vs cray was so vastly different that it was a no-brainer.
Even hooking a feed to take home was rarity, maybe a couple of times a season. Mostly fish caught in pots was enough.
400 boats is a bit exaggerated isn't it. And how many times have you guys caught 30 dhuies a week let alone known someone who does. Firstly if you have ever worked on deck when it's been blowing 30-40 knots for a month straight the last thing you want to do is go fishing after work all you wanna do is go home and sleep. And I did 4 years out there and we didn't sell fish once and out of all of my mates who worked there was probably one boat that use to sell fish nd that was only when they camped out at big bank. Just get so sick of all the shit talk about pros raping everything. There is just as much impact by rec fishes as anyone else
was just talking bout this yesty on the way home from the ramp.... chongy, not all pros sell the bycatch in the pub... but had a mate from a cray boat from Lanno, that had the best cacka pickling recipe around.. could always buy cheap crays, and demersal fillets from him... back then, I only thought the nice fish were what I caught in exmouth and was too inexperienced to realise that whiting and herring werent the only thing we could catch metro... back to the ol' 'if only I knew then'... reckon I woulda dealt with it different!!
Gotta say though.. land based fishing in perth is crap now... I havent seen a herring for ages.... theyre probably out there.. someone please tell me!!
going by the fishing reports being posted it appears (to me) that the fishing for dhuies etc in the metro area has improved some what. Now whether this is through the ban (2 months) or banning the cray boats from taking class one fish as by catch I don't know. I think it is to early to say that the 2 month ban has anything to do with the improved catch rates. An thats a sore point because with new changes proposed by fisheries it appears to me that they DoF are bringing in change upon change without giving enough time to properly evaluate the effect of the first change.
Bycatch from rocklobster fishermen,in one of the Dof reports there is a listing of the weights of different by catch taken by these boats and it is quite impressive, again I don't believe that stopping the taking of this bycatch is the total reason for improvement in the metro fishing. Stopping the pros from drop lining and netting in the metro are (Kallbarri to Manjimup) don't worry about spelling) certainly must have some effect. Perhaps it is because of all these changes combined that has given the perception that local fishing for dimersals is improved.
Hey boy`s just for the record - Cray fishing boats have not been aloud to sell bycatch ie Fish for over 5 years now. and are in fact not aloud to carry any fin fish equipment on there vessels at all (not even a hand line).
They must follow all the rec fish rules now as the rest of us if they are to bring in fish that have come up in the pots.
FYI i was cray fisherman for 15yrs and never once sold a fish!!!!!!! and out of a fleet of 20 or so boats there was one who caught and sold fish regulary.
I agree with meglodon, its a combination of all but i suspect it has a lot to do with the gill nets.If you read the forums and the 1 down the south coast in particular ( thats where the nets are now) you will find that they are reporting a decrease in their take and often complete areas with no fish where once they were guarenteed a feed. Ban Gill Nets altogether and you will see huge improvement.
Winces the closure and the stopping I the pros I have noticed alot more snapper around, plenty of size and undersize! I had a couple of mates who finished working on boats 8 years ago out of mandurah. When the snapper were on there were boas regularly gong out and cleaning up 50-100 fish average. I did hear one day one boat got 1.5 tonne. It's not all pros though. We used to be able to take 4 dhuies each not 2 per boat so that's why stocks are alstarting to come back!! I remember days of taking 2 boats out for 10 dhuies 6-24kg!!!! Best thing they done was make it 2 demersals each and have the ban
Sounds like a combination of factors!! hopefully this 2 month period helps with successfull breading, im presuming this is the main time for fish aggregation of our main species?
I know my success rate has increased over the last year, but thats becuase its my second year out wide and time on the water is adding up.
Breeding season down here is over xmas, but they wouldnt close it down then, lose to many votes. Also how is that meant to work if we are banned and the pro fishos can fish at that time cause their ban is earlier on beats me.
the most by pros...train they like circus animals ...here the boat(big thumping deisle) same time everyday dump berley ...in low prices or bad catches (crays) some local pros use to come in with 30 to 50 thumping pinks..closed season for crays 2 local pros use to do the odd over nighter .(long lines) fill up there live tanks with dhues and pinks...also sharks....95% off pros cant be stuffed fishing and generally just got a feed..(there to tired doing pots all day) ..i still think its unfair on them ..they should be allowed same as amatuer ...get a feed for there family ...a few now supplement with occos,,agree with snappermiles ,,,has made huge diff to stocks.. ban must also help a small amount..who knows for sure,,i know 1 thing snapper are like blow fish not endangered at all..
