Demersal jigging confused

Hi fellas, been getting into this demersal thing recently, been getting a few species but nothing spectacular. I still want to big dhuie on jig in the metro, I guess that's the prize that all Perth jiggers want. Been reading past post on gear that people use for it and it seems ridiculous to me.

when I bottom bounce I use 80lb, and still some critters I hook up still bust me off. I've figured out that the lighter I go the more hits I get on jig. I was told that a good jig catches more fish due to its colour and finish, so I've bought a few at 30 bucks plus each. But people on here recommend using pe2.

I just want to know what is the biggest dhuie anyone here caught on pe2? I just don't want to throw away my jigs to the ocean before I go down to pe2.

btw. I've gone down to using 40 lb braid, or should I just stay at this point?

How on earth are you getting

How on earth are you getting busted off on 80lb in Perth? Are you catching the bottom?

I've landed 20kg sambos and 10kg dhufish on PE2 and seen pics of double that done on FW.

knot failure

I am by no means an expert by even with heavy mono line it will break very easily if the knots aren't tied very well so with the combination of well tied knots a good shock leader a well set drag and not skull dragging the fish to the surface, you should have no worries with a PE2 main line and 20-30lb leader....

Are your knots giving way or are they reefing you?

Maybe try a longer leader if your getting reefed

Mate with the right gear

Sun, 2013-04-14 09:33

Mate with the right gear there is not a dhuie you can stop with pe2.Ive caught several dhuies around the 15kg mark and a 25kg blue groper in 50m on my combo without the thought of getting busted off.My mate dirt(also a fw member) has caught a couple of bigger 20kg dhu's on the same gear.We use daiwa catalina 4000's with 20lb daiwa jigging braid and a 1.5m 40lb wind on leader, mated to quality rods.If you go to heavy with ya gear your success will be limited with the jigs. The main reason we lose a few jig is those bastard leatheries. They love jigs;)

16.8kg weighed on me drive way on pe2 the other day.

had some big sambos up around 20kg on this outfit too.

just depends on how you play the fish you cant skull drag, tactics aply when fishing pe2

gday mate

personally i have gone from 30lb up to 50lb (power pro of course) to a 50lb flurocarbon leader for jigging.  i have always leaned towards heavier gear i suppose . i use 85 lb for general bottom bashing,

Wangler will comment im sure. i wouldnt be happy using his gear to knock over a decent bream, but he gets up 20kg dhuies.

whatever you decide to use just use it with confidence. those bloody jigs do work!

Yeh, I come to realise that

Sun, 2013-04-14 16:17

Yeh, I come to realise that they do work, spending more time jigging now when I go out......still bait fishing 70% of the time tho:) hard to keep jigging when my bait fisho buddies are getting all the bites on bait. Although I did get the first dhuie on the weekend before them on jig, pity it was undersized. So I know one day I'll hook into a decent one, that's why I'm asking this question. I've landed one 70 cms on pe5 68lb but no other fish until I dropped to pe3 40lb I am getting more other fish. Guess ill stick to this for a while.

cheers

hi

 hi mate,

if you are the only one who do jigging on the boat.

your chances of catching fish will be less.

if all people on the boat are jigging~ the chances go up reali high.

as fish see jig as bait fish, so u will have better chances if there are 4- 5 BAIT fish bouncing around then the only BAIT fish bouncing around.

cheer kelvin~
