Lead

Afternoon all,

Hope everyones having a good day and making plans for the weekends fishing.

Was just wondering if anyone knows of a supplier in Perth where i can buy lead in bulk.

Heading down tommorrow for one day so somewhere near the airport would be handy.

Cheers,

Wayno

Whenever I need to make

Thu, 2013-04-11 16:06

Whenever I need to make sinkers up (if that's what you're doing) I go to a tyre shop that I might be driving past and ask for some used wheel weights. Last time I was given 50kg and they couldn't have been happier to give it to me. (yes give means no charge)

Burley it and they will come.

most tyre shops will charge for lead. sometimes you can barter your way by offering a reasonable amount of sinkers

the only prob with using old tyre leads there is a lot of cr@# in it and needs to be melted and seperated first to make ingots then melt again to make the sinkers. it is a lot cheaper but more messing around

The other problem with tyre

Thu, 2013-04-11 22:43

The other problem with tyre weights is that they aren't pure lead but have alot of antinomy in the mix.

This makes the weights harder and slightly lighter.

This also causes your sinkers to "TINK" when banged agaist a hard object (limestone bottom/ reef) or another sinker.

This can scare off some fish which are noise shy but can attract others.

Your sinkers can be harder to pour and may crumble and brake comming out of the mould.

You just have to get some soft lead and add it to your melting pot to get the mix right.

Have used both before

Sheet lead from the scrap yard is heeps better than wheel weights as a lot of weights nowadays are steel so you end up with a lot of crap left over and the lead is very dirty with a lot of scum in the lead

whitworths used to sell it in ingots for boat ballast not sure of they still do

Lead ingot's

Fri, 2013-04-12 10:29

These guys sell recycled lead ingot's   http://www.ingotmetals.com.au/index.htmls .   I think at $2.50 kg .

Tyre weights are ok , but a real pain to clean , and remove the metal clips .  Most metal recyclers ( Lawrance, Sims etc ) have lead too , but it is usually  in scrap form and agian needs to be sorted and cleaned

Cheers Grant .
