Demersal Jigging Sesh
Today marked my first sesh amongst the demersals since the ban. Finally!
I agreed to meet John F & do a co-op effort around some unfamiliar territory. Tim (Timvb) was my deckie for the day & he was keen as mustard to nail some demersals on jig. He's been doing a bit of work overseas & has a short stint in Perth before he heads back - so, as you can imagine, he was frothing for a fish.
Within minutes of leaving the marina, we were joined by a little bird that called the boat home for the day. It was quite unreal - this bird would sit aerodynamically anywhere on the boat whilst we travelled at 20-25kts throughout the day. It wouldn't leave us & at times, would also sit on our shoulders!
Today was a day of effort. As mentioned, we were in unfamiliar territory & needed to do some sounding out to find some structure & fish. It wasn't easy. John scored a nice patch of ground 2kms away from me & we communicated over the radio about what was happening. He was scoring pinks, pup dhu's & sambos
Tim & I continued to search & after almost 2 hours of headless chook driving, I found a big patch of something special. We continued to sound around the area to get a feel of where we were fishing & I managed to punch in numerous new co-ords of fishy territory.
We chose to jig the area. Tim hadn't scored anything to talk about on jig so I coached him in technique & it paid dividends. He started off small but soon worked into some bigger models. We used IMA Ro's side by side scoring numerous Dhu's over a large area. Tim's effort resulted in PB's - and fair dinkum was he happy.
Boy did some of these fish go hard. Drag pressure was fundamental given the territory we were fishing & we did have a few nervous moments. I did end up losing one which went especially hard - would've been one of those dream monster Dhu's.
Early by-catch included pinks & a baldie (which is being carved up for dinner!).
We successfully released all but 2 Dhu's. We cradled these fish like babies & released the fish that were in good condition.
Gear we used:
Light jig rods
4000-6000 reels.
PE2 & PE3 mainline.
40lb leader.
John will be a happy camper with Dhu for his BBQ tonight. P.s. John - cheers for the beers!
It was great fishing with another boat - especially, when we needed to find ground!
Excuse the smudged photos - forgot to bring the good camera, but fortunately, I had the boat camera at hand.

great report

Unlucky about the big fella that stichted you up.
Have you given fanky style jigs like pirates a crack or you a firm believer in the ima ros.
Cheers

Haven't used pirates mate.
Haven't used pirates mate. Not really particular with jig choice. Only particular with weight. I simply grab out whatever's there... or use & lose my deckies jigs. There are of course good jigs out there such as IMA ro's etc (all comes down to technique & action).

No wonder yu couldn't get rid of the bird, it a willy wagtail, not exactly a seafarer!

Top stuff Daz. Was a top day,
Top stuff Daz. Was a top day, although totally knackered now after a LOT of km ad a lot of sounding!
We just had BBQ dhu and pinkie.....deliceous.......the donated dhu and other pinkie will be Christmas lunch for my extended family! Ta!
We had a great day, but was a bit more difficlt as my deckie was using bait most of the day which made jigging much harder for me......even ended up on bait a few times as we had several tangles.
Anyhow, we hit the first bit of good ground and got 4 small dhu to 49.5 cm and 2 nice pinkies up to 63cm, most falling to bait with 1 dhu on jig. Then my jigs started to work and picked up a few bit and pieces before several rampaging sambos gave me a good workout on PE3.....ended with 3 sambos on PE3 jig before I ended up going too hard and busted off....by by favourite jig and 40 m of braid....ended with 2 sambos more on pink dildo soft pastic....man I thought I had a big dhu!
We then headed to see Daz and Tim as the radio chatter was getting frantic!
With the PE3 jig gear out of action, used my flick stick to jig with...hard work! Jigged a nice black arse, then my first proper dhu on jig of 51 cm on a small show we found on the way in, which was in good condition so was released. Managed to get the deckie on jigs....300 gram Black Magic is all he had.....he picked up a nice 53 dhu which was dinner.....quite a surprise.
Great day, just need to get the dedicated PE2 demersal jig rod and all will be well in the world!
Cheers Tim and Daz

New spot and fish everywhere - got to be happy with that. What depths were you jigging in?

Great work mate!
I always love light jigging, PE2 mainline and 400 size reels!
For Dhu, do you dangle your jig alot there or do you just pump and wind like crazy ?
Nice jigging rods, what set up were you using ? I can only see Stella 4000 but can't work out the name of the rod...
I suppose those jigs are in the 100g - 150g range ?
Cheers

Very slow jigging technique
Very slow jigging technique is used for Dhuies. We were using major craft alexander jig rods & up to 100g jigs.

Nice effort
I've gotta give this jigging more of a go. I always try it for a couple of drifts and then go back to the bait. Haven't really had much luck on them.
What marina did you leave from and what water depth were you fishing in?

Ah this is what I need, some coaching on jigging for demersals. Been giving it a go recently but not doing so well.
Were you guys south rotto way? Boat looks similar to a boat we saw out there. We managed our limit with 2 dhus a pink and a bb. But on bait
