Demersal/Light Jigging Combo?
Submitted by Mela_77 on Tue, 2012-02-07 09:30
heya all ... I know this was discussed few times before, but I searched and couldn't find the answer I'm after ... so more help please
I'm after a light decent spinning combo, just for light jigs (40-100gm) and plastics (up to 4 Oz jighead). My main thing is that I want it light, as I've got really bad shoulders & back !! Looking for PE1.5 to 3
Haven't got a clue about price range, especially with Rods, as there are that many in the market ... but medium to high end please.
Any input would be helpful and appreciated ...
Cheers for that

Hey Luke, cheers mate for the feedback ...
Wouldn't go that high (S 62S) with the Rod to be honest ... saying that, I would with the reel! But the DB sounds good to me, and certainly thought about it.
Now what Reel would you fit on the DB? I was thinking between the Certate Hyper 4000 and the Saltiga 4000?

Lemax Grand Master 661 (PE 1-3 / 120g lure) with the Hyper Certate would be a tip top match.

Jigging master have some good
Jigging master have some good cheaper options on a light jig rod now.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I've got a Shimano Stella
I've got a Shimano Stella 5000SW on a custom built Samurai NV8. This is my favourite rig by a mile and I have quite a few nice toys! I can send some pics of the rod if you like. I got this nice Red Emperor on it a while back which was good fun on light gear (30 lb braid).

Plenty of these light rods to go with so hard to really say what is best. I like the higher end Daiwa range in terms of off the shelf factory rods and there is surely to be a Shimano T curve in there somewhere to also fit the bill. Definitely get the best reel the budget will let you though first and look at the rods later. This is especially true in the lighter class you are looking at as you can get a pretty decent rod for not too much money.

Mela, I wouldn't get a
Mela, I wouldn't get a certate, they are great reels but you will wear one out to quick using PE3. I would opt for Saltiga 4000
The new catalina in going to be out march and that will offer a tough reel in a cheaper price bracket then saltiga, should be around $$700-800
I wouldn't opt for a stella as they are only high speed model which is too fast for jigging, you could opt for a JDM model stella in low speed but personally I think the saltiga is a better reel regardless of the reviews some people swear by. The saltiga is the lastest and greatest reel available and I don't think you can get anything better at this moment in time.
Demon blood rod would be very good option, Hearty rise is nice but too short for demersal jigging. I feel you need a rod longer than 5'9" to impart good action on jig.
I would also consider Saltiga S-Extreme 63S or Combi Jerk 64. The 63 would be best i think and they are priced at $449.
Best off dropping intp the shop and having a look at a few different setups

Certate 3500HD is the reel I
Certate 3500HD is the reel I have at the moment and it performs great. Holds 300m pe2 or ~250 pe3 very robust reel, decent drag and the gear ratio is ideal for bottom work.

Cheers guys for all the
Cheers guys for all the feedback ... I can understand now about the Certate Hyper 4000, and what can happen with it's high gear ratio.
Bunny: thanks for the thoughts, I've always been a Shimano guy, but for this outfit, I'll probably try something else, other than the Stella.
Luke, I'll probably drop by either Fri or Sat to have a look. I'm due to drop my boat as well

can someone please explain to
can someone please explain to me, what would go wrong , jigging with a size for size reel, with high gear ratio vs low.
i use a sustain 4000 with 5.8-1 ratio. still find i'm doing 1.5 + winds when jigging.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

T curve Saltwater spin 10-15 kg
and a shimano 4000 size reel. I use a symetre 4000 with 20lbs braid and 40 lbs leader and have had some great fun landing good size sambos, still yet to crack a size dhu or pinky on it but it would easily take it from the sambos I have landed. The symetre is the stradics little brother, and doesnt come with an extra spool, minus one bearing or something. Anything from there up will still be fine.

I would look at the JM
I would look at the JM titanium 150. I have the overhead and find it works light jigs really well. Other rod that I own in spin that is really nice is the Maria Steady Jigging, they come in a number of jig weights - I have the 80-200gm spin with a new saltiga on it and find it really good on 120-200gm jigs and heavier soft plastics.

Agree about the Maria Steady
Agree about the Maria Steady Jigging rods. I have a 60-150g and it is one of the best jigging rods I have used. Great soft feel but heaps of balls to stop that big fish. Works well with jig weights from 100-150g, perfect for demersal jigging. Another favourite of mine is the Evergreen Spin Jerker Light. Awesome PE2 rod. Great for jigs in the 60-100g and plastics up to 3oz.

Lot of nice combo's that crew are running .. for my light gear .. Seagate light 3500 running pe 2 .. and a cheap pe 1-2 rod ... not sure what the problem is about the hyper certate 4000 .. I've been using mine with pe 3 and 4 for years with no issues :...

just dought a daiwa fuego
just dought a daiwa fuego 3000, similar to our luvious i beleve, under $200,spair spool, 7bb, 4.8:1 ratio, made of that zaion light weight crap similar to stradic ci4, going on a shimano trevalla tvsl with 20lb accudepth, also have a stradic ci4 4000 on a trevala tvsml, 30lb accudepth, super lightweight feels great in the hand and a daiwa bradia 2500 15lb sunline on a JM sabregame 55s, all these outfits came in around $400 and feel pretty good to me to, still plan on saltiga hitting the stable later in the year but will be big one for popping.
good luck
Here we go again.

Or towards the other end of
Or towards the other end of the scale I reckon you'd be happy with a Shimano Terez 15-30lb with a Stradic FJ 5000 or the even lighter (CI4) Rarenium 5000.

Haven't really had a play
Haven't really had a play with them, what do you reckon would let them down Till, misalignment causing wear under load due to the CI4 perhaps.

Yeah I've been wondering how the C!4 will go under load, I see they've made the Sustain rotor out of it now, good move or not I don't know, Hard to beat ali in that area.

Shame more people arent using
Shame more people arent using the saragosa- the 4000 looks to be a great demersal jigging reel- All the drag you will need for PE2, light in weight and enough capacity of 30lb braid.

I'm not sure
how many different reels you've had a look at but Saragosa's are definatly not 'light'.

The 4000 saragosa is a whole
The 4000 saragosa is a whole 51gr heavier than the 4000 and 5000 stradic FJ and sustain FG. Will take my hat off to the bloke who can honestly tell the 51gr difference when its full of line, rigged on a rod and had a 100g metal hanging off it.

Ahh,
your right. I guess I was just splitting hairs.
With all the options out there I guess your could find a lighter reel easy enough but for the sake of 50g or 100g who cares?
