Denizens of the Deep
Great arvo out wide with Langa and TimVB on Saturday.
Given how good the conditions were forecast to be, the plan was to leave at lunchtime for a late arvo session out wide with the idea of staying out into the evening and fish a few spots after dark on the way home, something we had always talked about doing but never got around to.
Not everything went to plan, as we bagged out by sunset so could not fish on the way home in some of the best conditions I have been out in. We had to content ourselves with a few coldies on the way home instead, that dhuie jig in the dark n 50m will have to wait.
After a bit of a look around out wide, we found plenty of fish on the sounder, and the first few drops resulted in nannies, with this triple header on 2 hooks a bit different. The nannies dont seem too phased by baro and swim down OK by themselves, but not sure how good they are after coming up from the deep.
After fighting through the nannies, I got a good hookup and bloody good fight, but when it was still fighting at 50m to go we knew it was an Amberjack. Released quite happily.
FISH ON for Tim. Good bend on the broomstick suggested a good fish.
15 kg GB, happy days.
Tim on again…….this time a great double header.
At this point, Matt is starting to get edgy. After numerous deep drop trips and, he had not yet opened his account apart from numerous greeneyes……this all changed with a god sized Radiant Cod to Langa, one of THE best eating fish in the sea.
I followed with a pinkie from the depths. Pretty amazed how deep this species goes. Interestingly, the flesh on these deep dwellers is much fattier and oilier than pink snapper from shallow water. Having it for dinner tonite so will be interesting to see how it stacks up.
Just on dark, hooked up and fought a sizeable fish to within 30 m of the surface according to the electric before it pulled the hook, pretty disappointed and on inspection at home, the circle hook had straightened. Matt suggested we keep an eye out but after a minute I had given up hope, but another minute or two this beast popped up next to the boat……….went 30.2 kg and 1150 mm.
A bountiful spread last night, had radiant cod, some of the 15 kg grey band and some sand whiting I caught with my young tacker on Sunday. Radiant and grey band are very different on the plate, radiant very moist and tender, grey band firm but still moist at this 15 kg size. Both were absolutely wonderful, some of the best fish I have had.
Great day out, thanks fellas.

Mate - seeing that makes my plaice fishing trip on Saturday feel incredibly anticlimactic.
Slaying it as usual. John - how's the first weekend in October looking in your calendar ;-)
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Good Eating
Those grey band are about as good eating as you get IMHO. Just hope you have a big freezer! What depth were you at by the way?

Top trip John
We got some Pinkies in 270m off Jurien, and I reckon they were firmer and better eating than the shallow water ones....be interested in your assessment. Sunday wasn't nearly as nice, but we still managed to bag out. Had some of a 27kg Grey-band tonight. I cut it across the grain (ie like a cutlet) and it was tender and pretty damn good.

Great Fishing
I had some 8 Bar Cod that went 30 plus kg and was extremely tasty. Just had to make sure that you didn't over cook it.

Nice fish there John
As a matter of interest what was the size and brand of the circle hook that straightened?

About a 10/0, was a pre-made
About a 10/0, was a pre-made Ocean Side rig, which are quite nice quality, unsure of the hook brand though. Had a heap of drag on PE6 and it was pulling string, and it was last part of the circle that straightened where it narrows, and it would appear maybe the hook went only partly into the hard jaw bone, so no real complaint, its just one of those things.
