It's been 500mm for over 20

It's been 500mm for over 20 years that I know of.

Caught my first one in 6m of water off Jurien Bay (North Head) on a handline back in 1992.

Was happy as a pig in mud when it went 55cm.

I think it was set as that as

I think it was set as that as fisheries research said that they become sexually mature before they hit 500mm. Cant remember the exact size but i think it was around the 400-450mm?

Granted they also did state that the bigger the Dhui(Female) the more eggs it could produce, so in theory more baby Dhuis.

 Is this the same fisheries

Is this the same fisheries research that said the 2 month demeral ban was to give demerals peace while breeding when Dhu allegedly dont breed during the 2 month period.

Nah this was stuff i read

Nah this was stuff i read back in the late 90's, so probably pre, the bullshit we were fed about Dhuis breeding during the Demersal Ban.

We all know they come in closer/breed more around Dec-Jan, but the State Gov didnt want to be unpopular having the Ban during School Holidays. So really it wasnt Science that made them have the Ban from only 15 Oct to 15 Dec its was Political Popularity(not Fisheries Decision). Originally they pegged it for 4 months till the 15 Feb, but guess there was enough community backlash to it encompassing the School Holiday they scraped that section.

get it up to 600mm. A 500mm Dhuie is nothing more than a Striped Black Bream. Hardly worth keeping at all.

Thu, 2013-03-21 09:57

to protect the breeders say 900mm ,the smaller ones taste so much better anyway
