canon ixux would be ideal. I
canon ixux would be ideal. I think olympus make a similar camera that is waterproof to about 3 metres..... it is also drop proof to about 1.4metre.......i would probably go the olympus!

does waterproof appeal?
Pentax Optio WS80 - they are around that $300 mark if I recall correctly.
Its only waterproof to a couple of metres (fully immersed), but that would make it pretty splash proof etc on the boat which would be an advantage.

ixus 110
Just got an Ixus 110 for $340 and i'm very happy with it, 10MP i think, does HD video as well. Also got a 32GB SD for $25 so I can fit alot of footage on there. Ikelite make a housing for them too, thats next.
Only downside is they don't come with a HDMI cable, but they are on Ebay along with spare batteries very cheap. Think it cost me $15 for 3 batteries, never have to worry about a charger when camping or what not.

Dunno about the Ixus ... My
Dunno about the Ixus ... My bro had one and it was never flooded or even wet but just stopped working properly and canon knocked back the warranty claim because of condensation. I'd buy a waterproof camera and put it in a waterproof caseif I needed some more depth.

We had the exact same Pentax
We had the exact same Pentax model and one day it decided not to take a photo any more at a special school event .
So after a bit of consideration we have the Olympus 8000 Tough camera. We have had it for a few months now. It is a pretty good point and shoot camera. It has preset settings and auto setting so it is not too difficult to use.
We have dropped it, taken it swimming and it has survived. For us this was the most practicle choice as we are out on the water alot and anything we own needs to be tough.
It does have limitations I am struggling to get a good shot of the kids school concerts they come out dark and does not zoom in real close. (this could be an opperator problem if anyone has any ideas let me know)
overall we are happy with our choice. Would love to have a digital SLR but for what we do this is by far most practicle in the price range.

Yeah, i've had a few Canon's
Yeah, i've had a few Canon's and have had nothing but good experiences, althoguh i'm sure like anything there are bad ones.
Like Till said, if you were to be serious, you'd buy a point and shoot and put it into an Ikelite, or just buy a SEA & SEA or equivalent.
I would have a hard time trusting a point and shoot underwater without a housing. Have seen a few flood and whenever you had the camera on you, you would be limited as to how deep you could dive by the depth rating. Ikelite does 60m, doubt i'll ever hit that freediving.
