Does the almanac really work?

Whats everyones thoughts on the old almanac predictions for fishing days and bite times? Do you take notice of the "worst" or "best" days?

I have fished at 'tides4fishing' best times and not even picked up a blowie.

I just go fishing and enjoy the ride. If I come across Beau, I stalk him as he manages to find the fish.....

Sundown, high tide, tide change, moon phases and feeding predictions, it all helps when you have fish around!! I follow it when possible as I need as much in favour as possible.

Same thing for bait! , fresh is best but I've landed big snapper on 3 month old frozen leather jacket, I guess it was a peak feeding time.

I go by it all the time. Not 100% correct and fish have to be in the area but I've found days predicted to be good generally are. I've also noticed it lines up with the weather alot for example when the weathers poor and from the north, nw or west it generally predicts bad fishing and the opposite when it's nice with a high pressure over us and light easterlies or variable winds.

Piece of string?

Yes it works , defiently , totally accurate , never fails _____--------- some times ,

its so spot on on somedays ----------- and a total failure on others.

Thats the bite times that is , I would say local conditions , Weather , time of year, bait availability etc etc

overide it , so It can be hit and miss.

I do find best / worst days to be more accurate , which is just following the mooon phases of course,

and the old 4-5 days before and 1-2 days after the new and full moons is a great guide for trip planning etc

on other days I just go fishing,--- after all, you  dont only trawl the night clubs  on certain nights  do you? urr mm if your into that sort of thing, haha

Between the almanac and which way the wind is blowing and tides you usually can tell if it's a good day of not, we've had the bite % at 100% and got nothing due to a nor wester and the fact it usually makes it lumpy

the feeding times are pretty much 99% accurate we've found tho

but if your not on good ground then you won't catch anything anyway

we have fished 1 spot heaps of shows and nothing, move over 20m and bang, fish every drop

Like everything else

Tue, 2014-07-29 14:45

IMO its like everything thing else, fish can't read so don't know when they are supposed to bite, lures are not designed to catch fish only the people who buy them hope they will catch fish [take a walk in any major tackle store and see how many different types, colours, textures, sizes, shapes and so on of lures just reaching out and asking for you to take them home]. Same goes for expensive rods and reels, the fish doesn't know what is on the other end of the line be it a Stella 10.000 or a fifty year old Alvey [not knocking Alveys], same goes for the rod and shirt the angler is wearing, makes you look good but does bugger all to improve your catches.
End of rant

yes- I think the one point I would make is that the latest fishing fashion is way out of control these days. I went away overseas for 6 years, came back and everyone's dressed up like a Christmas tree. colourful long sleeve shirts and legionnaires hats are now back in season with matching face scarfs being all the rage. A pair of shorts and t-shirt still works for me.

I generally have a look but don't follow it religiously - as others have said you can have good catches at other times and anyway half the fun is just being out there (beats work).

Can follow the almanacs all you like but the key is being in the right spot at the right time. Fish are opportunistic and will feed when their hungry or its an easy feed. Same goes for tides - different areas fish better at different stages of the tide.

My fishing shirt/face sock/lucky fishing hat and necklace play their part too!!

Moon/tides definitely have an effect on red bight fish (nannagai) down here so the guys who fish out wide tell me. Often they will see big schools on the sounder and they simply won't bite...other times they will bag out within a couple of hours! They say they bite best on a rising tide with the moon phase at halfway between full and new....

But at the end of the day...most of us fish whenever we can, weather and work permitting and don't have the luxury of picking and choosing times

Like Crano, work and weather

Wed, 2014-07-30 12:14

Like Crano, work and weather dictate to me when to fish.

Almanac may be accurate, I don't know, but if everything lines up and you stay home because the Almanac says it's no good..........well, you may just miss out.
