SW Fresh water trip report
Had a surprise birthday trip to Karri Valley Resort.
As usual the trout in the Lake there was easy to catch and caught a few. Kepth 2 out of about 50 caught and very surprised at the taste of the stocked, corn fed (how you catch them in Lake Beedalup) trout. Very nice to say the least compared to wild caught.
Fishing the Shannon and Warren was a little hit and miss. No wild trout and surprised that we only got a couple of redfin.
My question is we were restricted to easy to gain accesss to areas such as the camping areas on Heartbreak trial, the crossing off the Warren on the main road to Northcliff and Shannon camping areas (orthopaedic issues!!!)
Using mostly my small yellow fin whiting lures, which has a few prawn imitation, minnows and stickbaits, small poppers. The local General store stocks a few lures and we were advised to also try small spinner baits, but the going was slow.
Despite this and a few hundred casts landed only 3 Reddies.
Having been in the Pilbara for 6 yrs and wanting to do this agian is there any advise and what we were doing wrong or was it just "its called fishing, not catching"
Changed speed of retrieve, style of retrieve, pauses etc.
Only lost 2 lures to "bad" cast as both off us can hit targets with casting pretty much, so snags were targetted.
All in all very peaceful fishing but I dont call catching trout in a stocked dam true sport.
Any advice appreciated on how to remove a few Redfin from the fresh water down there.

Probably target your reddies
Probably target your reddies in summer, they will be more active I would think. Sounds to me like your doing ok anyway !

Me and a mate of mine went
Me and a mate of mine went to the Murray River in March or April and spent a few hours each morning flicking lures around for no success. I went and caught some bait and once the beer was cracked after lunch, sat back under a tree with a gilgie sitting about a metre under a float and was getting a fish a cast, while my mate persisted with lures for zilch. Not big ones, but it was more fun and relaxing than flicking lures.
As trymyluck says, summer would probably be the go, more active, less water so a higher fish population density I guess you'd call it, more chance of success. I'll be heading back to the same spot I mentioned above in summer just to test that theory anyway.

Have to admit that
after a few 100 cast was tempted to get the shovel and dig for some worms.
But resisted because the aim was to lure fish only. Had to try that after soaking corn kernels for the "easy" trout.

Take a canoe next time
Launch from Heartbreak and head either up or down into quieter areas, stunning country and great fishing once you get clear of the hard hit areas and some stonker reddies to be found even on soft plastics

2" soft plastic mino for the Redies.
The above softie needs to be tea bagged, up and down up and down in a small area. I hit the Warren once a year and find this the very best way to get Redies.
if the softie has a long tail you will get lots of hits but few hook ups. Keep it all as light as possible, walk out on a log or similar. Up and down up and down.
Lift rod tip a few feet. Have to agree, it sounds like you are on the money. Perhaps next time you will get more.

This may be very obvious but
This may be very obvious but fish your lures as deep as possible. Using small spinners generally catches plenty of fish for me, although the average size is small. Let them sink for a couple of seconds depending on depth of water

redfin plastics
all zman grubs and strike tiger nymphs work on redfin anything that even resembles a trout or redfin will go off. I have used carmen red ecogear and caught 5 in 20 mins driving though harvey few weeks ago. my mate went down to the warren during the end of summer and caught 35-40cm reddies so maybe go for redfin during summer they are alot more eager but when a small school moves through you can rid them all in a few seconds. the tt lures rev head is also dynamite on them giving them a go is worth it. try to target snags, still water, under trees etc

Not surprised you didnt get
Not surprised you didnt get anything in the Shannon as im pretty sure there are no fish in there other than the native minnows and pygmy perch. The warren can be a hard water to fish in winter when the water levels are high. Late spring/early summer are the best times IMO.

Cheers all
Yeh thought so. But gave it a flog anyway. With the rains we had the water levels were high judging from the steps into the River at the Camping spots on Heartbreak. They were all under water.
Will give it another go latter in the year with water levels down and hotter.

Hate to be a pedant, but I'm pretty sure there is no fishing allowed in the Shannon River.

Thanks guys
Certainly were I was fishing was allowed because there was signs everywhere. But it made me look at where we were. It's the Donnelly not Shannon, because we fished around Snotty Gobble just because it was a funny name.
Sorry about the confusion.

For me hands down my fav lure for trout has always been the rainbow trout pattern in Rapala cd4 or 7...
Trout lollies but that was in mates stocked dams in SA and lakes/rivers in NZ not in SW WA
