How to get the fishing mojo back?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2014-07-21 17:17
Well, what can I say but over the last year I have lost the fishing mojo - to the point I'm just not that amped about it. I guess it really comes down to so many years being spoilt in Exmouth and it being so far to go in Karratha (it's not massively far, but an effort compared to Exxy)
Doesn't help that both my boats are out of action either at the moment, ones being fixed and the other needs love and money.
So when you've got into that lull, how have you managed to get yourself out of it?

dream of a red letter day
and go an attempt it, can be difficult when your circumstances change and it requires more effort for maybe less action, would exxy be easyier to catch quality fish then k town, never been there

Ha ha I come on here and
Ha ha I come on here and check out the image section of all the buggers catching good fish. I usually have a down time of 3 or 4 months which is now so come Novemeber I'm bursting to get back out there with new tactics and ideas. BJ inspired me yesterday so my mind has been in over drive ever since devising ways of my new foray. It's usually those first few warm days of spring that get me going and thinking of the Tailor run in the river before taking the boat up the coast for summer and autumn.

Usually starts with a couple of phone calls. This weekend was a quick bill fix after not chasing them since aibt. Getting amped for November blue time now.

I haven't been out much lately.
But I have this week off, so it looks like I will be heading out dinghy bashing inshore one day this week at least and head out with a forum member maybe on thurs.
I will be stoked with just a couple of squid as its been ages since I have been out and had a really good session on them, but basically anything at the moment will be better than my recent form due to lack of time.
I guess when you hit rock bottom, anything will do to fill the urge, I might even go for a shorebash for bream..

I went through the same back a few months ago
Then refound the mojo by just getting back to basics like chasing a few squid and whiting on light gear..
great fun and easy to do..
I've spent half my life fishing.. The other half I have wasted..

Keeping it simple is the key
Keeping it simple is the key for me lately. I am really not interested in going to all the effort at the moment and dragging the big boat out is not on my radar much these days. Been out a few times over the last few weeks in my mates tinny and have had a blast catching salmon and stuff. Good fun and easy....
Cheers

try something new
Try something you havent before. For me this year it was popping for whiting in the shallows.
FTo me trying something new gets me thinking on a new level and returns the stoke. Before you know you will be back out again.
Or we perthites could just say its first world problems and you should harden up lol

back to basics I find. often have a bit of a lull just before summer, and often it is one afternoon spent on the flats in the river that gets me back into it.

Go on an adventure off in
Go on an adventure off in another country like Thailand where Bkkguy is fishing and catching heaps of good species like barra and some of the other local species there.
if you don't wanna spend the money on that stuff just teach yourself a new technique for a different type of fish. Like fly fishing or something like that.
finally if you don't want to do any of those just go back to the basics like beach fishing for the bread and butter species like tailor, herring and the other little fish that hang around there.
Fishing the swan for bream, it's just an obsession

Only take fly rods ..or try
Only take fly rods ..or try for a world/Aussie record, still plenty of achievable ones left. Try one kilo, I was surprised how many big bluebone I got once I tried.
Or simply give it a rest for a while

I try to stack the odds in
I try to stack the odds in my favour, prefer fishing when the weather is better and the fishing almanac says the fish are biting
but have to say I have had plenty of days when nothing works at all, I always have a back up plan In case the bottom bouncing doesn't work, squidding is one of these.
keep putting in the effort and your bound to catch something.

and what was important then is not as important now ,used to play squash ,liked travelling , then ten pin etc. however one thing has always been constant the love of being on the water ,wetting a line -catching fish , just need to make the effort and once you go out a few times you will know if your moving on to the next faze

I'll make you feel better
I'll make you feel better Adam,as it could be a lot worse:
Love my fishing and get out on the water as much as possible, until last week.
I've managed to bust up my foot and break my ankle, having surgery later this week. At least 6 weeks on crutches after surgery, then psycho starts.
It's going to be a long time before I get back on the water to do something that I really enjoy. Housebound is going to suck!
Enjoy your fishing, you don't know what is around the corner.

Get into the mangroves behind the salt place
And chase some jacks.................great fun, explosive takes and bloody hard to stop, always try and get in there whenever in Dampier, it is a really short trip from the boat club and this time of the year the sand flies are minimal
Still want to give it a go on soft plastics which I reckon would be a hoot

SP's
I've tried them on softies and they just destroy them, became an expensive process for just a few fish.

For me I always try to look
For me I always try to look for a new challenge.
That's why I've been doing heaps of freediving and spearfishing over the last 12 months instead of fishing.
Other things I do (funds allowing) is buy a new combo and this usually makes me want to get out and boat some good fish on the new gear.
Or sometimes plan a new adventure. Take some time off work and plan to go somewhere you've never fished before, perhaps you've fished there once but have been meaning to go back since.
Can't say I ever lost the mojo when I lived in Karratha - I could never get out enough! In Perth though that's another story. Cold shitty rough weather, ewww.
