Doing up the New Berty 25
well folks,
as some may know, I got me a Bertram 25
(yes I'm a sucker for old tubs..what can I say..)
This thread will follow her make over and progression for those interested.
She has a 415hp Mercuiser Horizon V8 in her driving a Bravo leg, +/- 2004 model.
She has had a Nova conversion done at some stage, that gives it a more cruiser wheel house look.
First thing was to tidy her up, toss out the crap.
And then I went buying toys...
First on the list was a sounder and ended up going bigger and more expensive than I wanted too.. but hey you only live once. So now there is a nice Furuno FCV295 going on the dash. ( with quick release cables and fittings, so to take away from thieving hands!) for now I'm going a wet-faced 1kw Furuno tranny, same as last time, the big commercial CA 200/50-1T, later it will be interfaced with a 3kw 38mhz single frequency fish-fryer....lol ( but need to save for that baby)
Plotter /GPS was a dilemma and ended up going back to a laptop PC based system. So bought the Mrs a new laptop and put her old Dell in as it still had RS232 coms ports etc. loaded up the Bluenav software I had and got a beta version of the Magellan Mapsend Lite Pro off their website. Now powering the GPS receiver side from an old B&W Magellan Sportstrack Pro. Total cost was a new laptop for the Mrs ( good brownie points for me... :-) ) and a nice little e-mail from Bluenav to allow me to use a back up CDRom as my original went up in smoke on the last tub. Seems the programs is linked to your GPS chip number and not the CD, so having the original GPS unit helped.
Next thing was to toss out the huge captains arm chair they stuck in the tub, .... why do people waste soooo much space with big arm chairs, all a skipper really needs is a bum-rest. That opened up the wheel house area nicely. Next was a new compass into the dash, as the old one was dodgy after many years of use right next to a sounder! couple of fans installed and some over head deck lights and we rocking! oh and a new set of speakers to keep the ears happy.
Then got a new Icom VHF radio ( I only recommend Icom, they the best by far) not cheap, but worth your life, that with a nice 2m aerial on the roof and we in business.
Biggest thing now to do is to replace the old steering wheel / helm. it is from the 1980s' and is badly chipped in places and hard on the hands. Biggest issue is the hydradrive system is the old square fit and may not be completable with newer helms.
Mechanic is doing the motor service and some new riser gaskets tomorrow plus new cranking batteries etc, then we going out on Saturday to see how she goes.
so now the tub is close to where I was with the last one, now to get some blood on the deck.

Quick!
Congrats on the new tub Tony. Much better looking then 'ugly betty'. The family won't be ashamed to be seen at Rotto now...and I might even pull up for a brew.
Good luck with the maiden voyage.

new rig
Nice looking rig there tony ,good to see your back out on the water so early.
the GPS running on a laptop, how do you go with the screen in bright sunlight and wet fishy fingers on the keyboard ?? is the laptop more power or quicker refresh than a GPS unit

ok, some quick
ok, some quick answers.
fishy fingers get chopped off if they touch me laptop...lol, but I do have a washable roll-up usb keyboard that will be used...lol
Sunlight wise it can be nasty if the lights from behind directly, but I do have the option of running an external monitor as I did on the last one.
Finally I am looking at importing from Asia a touch screen to view on that integrates the mouse into the touch screen and a pop up keyboard. they used in outdoor markets and not to pricey.
refresh wise the unit is faster than a cheap GPS, but not on the speed of a top of the range Furuno or Raymarine system. So it is better than a $700 gps entry model.
Function wise, you get loads more on the pc, like time tracks ave speed graphs, automatic logging of way points if you stop in a spot for more than a preset time ( I have mine at 1 minute). You can sort you spots into anchorage, fishing, trolling, even by species.
With the Next3G USB wifi on it, you can then compare wind, tides and weather features side by side with your GPS map and plan drifts etc...but then again you got to learn how to use them all first...lol ( which is what I need to do... :) )

bit like owning an old car
bit like owning an old car again,....:)
being able to get hands dirty and customize it the way you want it...lol
Well today put in an order for some more gear for the cabin area. Going the casting seat route as a bum-seat, so I did not loose the space taken up by a big wide helm seat, hey this is my fishing boat, not a movie cinema where you need armchair comfort...lol
I have also solved the issue of where the sounder is going, I'm going to hang it from the hardtop roof on a chair pedestal leg, with ah swivel base on it, so I can rotate the viewing angle of the screen left to right. Also the cabling will go up the posts center. I'm using a typical metal boat trailer light plug as a quick release for the tranny cables and power cables, so I can pull the FCV out quickly and take home at the end of the day, away from thieving hands!
Biggest advantage of the set up is not being limited by where on the dash to mount things and also now having the sounder up at eye level when steering, giving you that ability to look ahead and watch the bottom ground at the same time.
With luck when I get the touch screen monitor I am looking at to interface with the external video port of the PC plotter system, then it will hang just under the unit and have it all at finger tip reach.
One big item still to be done is the wiring of new switch pan and fuse box's as she still have the old black pull type fuses that take fuse-wire!!! yeah straight out of the 1970's...lol. I'm going to go with marine grade RCD trip switches that can be easily reset. it will be in a water proof cabinet and along the lines of the units done by F&B magazine with their last project.
Well hopefully I'll have more pics by sunday for you all.
( and with a little luck some blood on the deck on Saturday...fish blood and not my normal skinned knuckles..lol)

well got busy again today,
well got busy again today, got the sounder mounted up high from the hard-top, I used a pedestal swivel mount to allow me to see the sounder, no matter where I stand / fish in the boat. The swivel is also great for getting the sun off the screen when glare is bad,
To allow a quick fit and release, I'm using a trailer light plug and coupler ( 7 pin) for the power and tranny cables. This is because the FCV295 does not have plugs and is a hard wired unit.
Wasted a few hours fighting to remove the base of the old captains chair. The screws are seized in and looks like I'm going to have to drill them out!!!!! bugga. New casting seat is ready to go in and give some bum support when cruising.
Could not take the tub out cause we still short one of the water hoses that is badly perished.
Next week we should be ready for a day on the sea.

the seat I tossed out, nice
the seat I tossed out, nice big cumfy seat, but took up way too much room for me. Would suit a boat that did not have a kitchenette in it.
new one takes up less than a quarter of the space and gives me room to put an esky behind the casting -seat.

(No subject)
took the new tub out on Sunday morning and up the river,
she goes sweet and at just under 5000rpm we sitting nicely at 36knots. Cruises in the 22~25 knots range really nice.
Stuffed up the angle on the first tranny bracket, so could not fit it, just stuck the transducer in the engine box on the bottom and shot through the thick hull. Did ok on max gain, but that hull is bloody thick!
As you can see, Kieran already hunting blowies from the back and Michelle has found her spot.
On the way back to the Freo Stackers at around 3pm the swell was pumping in through Freo harbor, and easily a 1,5m short swell and chop going in....lets just say it got interesting and some air was seen! to the disgust of my two passengers, lol, couple of little water leaks between upper structure and hull produced a little dribble into the cabin, but nothing to squeal about. No water came into the hull under the water line, so that sweeeeeet.
no to get some blood on the beck and sort the tranny bracket out.

cr@p weather this weekend
cr@p weather this weekend ended up with me doing a little more on the tub and still not getting out to fish yet!
Well put in some sound proofing on the engine bay, as it's a deafening roar at full WOT with just a plain glass box over the beast of a motor. Remember this is a 502 cubic inch ( 8,2 Liter ) motor! So got some lead backed sound proofing, heavy as hell and some lighter stuff for around the back gunnel sections. Did not get a pic once it was in, as I was scared to move the lid around till the glue was fully dry and then later going to fit retaining washers etc over the top.
Also had the time to set up the position for the new touch screen GPS monitor for the laptop GPS system, sweat-as now, with the dash finally taking shape, just need to file a little off the bracket for the monitor and then to bolt it in tight with the quick release for taking the screen out when on the rack.

Today got a few more things
Today got a few more things done,
finally finished the transducer set up and need to test it still before painting the bracket.
Got the touch screen 15inch screen in for the GPS system as well and on a swing-arm mount.
Finally finishing touches to the insulation in the engine box.
Still got the new bum-seat to put in and wiring loom for new electronics to be finished off and fitting the remote spot on the roof, then it's fishing time!
I'll try get her out in the week or next Saturday and see how the transducer performs at speed and looking for detail.

update...yes long break
update...yes long break between them of late!
Last night finaly got the touch screen software on the screen to talk to the GPS software and now we have a supa-dupa fancy touch screen GPS system!
Seems the windows drivers needed to be fooled into thinking that here was more than one coms serial port, due to the GPS being on the main one and the touchscreen running off a usb~serial port converter and the docking station of the Laptop having re-assigned the bloody port numbers. Oh well after much yelling and abuse in the garage it works FINALLY
Next big hole in the pocket is the new clears and covers coming next week, then she is basicly finsihed, except for the bloody old cpatains chair mount still on the floor that I need to drill out the stripped screws holding it down still!
ps if anyone has a Furuno GP37 ( as I need a DGPS signal) and wants to sell it? let me know, part of my next electronics project is to get the Sounder, GPS and Laptop to talk to profile mapping software.
other updates of late,
four vertical rod holders in the cabin to allow easy rigging of lures and lines, six horizontal overhead rod holders and clips for storage of gear out of harms way, change to canopy structure supports to give more fishing room and stop fighting with poles and rods around the back! And a flip up bait board to go against the side to allow easy removal and washing of the bait board and bucket system.
I'll try and get some pics tomorrow, as I may take advantage of the good weather on Seabreeze being forcast and do a run out to 5 fathoms ealry tomorrow morning.

went for a little run with
went for a little run with the tub this morning before work,
still having a small interference on the tranny from water splashing back from the drive-leg. Going to move the unti out a little to cleaner water and try again, as I loose picture around 15~16knots.
But otherwise workerd well and even picked up a few fish on the screen, while on the fly across to Garden Island and back this morning.
Touch screen working SWEET now for the GPS and a pleasure to use, just the glare from sunrise was sh!Te.
Cruised back at close to WOT, 4600~4700rpm and 33~34 knots with ease.

Loosing Picture
When people say they loose picture at speed do they actually have no picture or is it full of clutter? That is certainly what happens to me.

if you look at my shot, you
if you look at my shot, you will see the white streaks through it. thats what I mean by loosing picture, IE the return signal is being blocked and weakend by bubbles and turbulent water under the face of the transducer. In my case the water is boucing off the drive leg and back into the path of the transducer, causing a cyclic interference.
Clutter is more when you get loads of "noise" from your return signal and you get more of merky picture and not a "white out" as I'm getting. If you getting larges amounts of clutter and "noise" in your picture, you need to turn your gain down a little till it clears up. With my gain full, I do get clutter as well.
I know exactly what the problem is with mine, it's mostly due to a very large tranny hanging into the water and being very " un stream lined" , so I need to do some more stream lining and find a quieter / smoother bit of water a little further out on the back. Bertrams ( older ones) have dificult hulls to find clean water, due to them having a forward strake section that stops halfway down the hull and that they very thick hulls and do not like wet-box's in them either.
cheers
Tony

OK
You are loosing bottom definition. That's not what I get. My screen fills with clutter / noise when I go much above 15 kts. Drop below that and it's a clear screen again.

Well ordered my new fairing
Well ordered my new fairing block, which will be modified to lower my tranducer lower into clean water and a little further out from the motor. Should arrive Wed and be put on next saturday, subject to weather and conditions.
Got the call to say they finished the new covers and clears, so the old girl has new clothes and looks mighty fine I'm told. I'll take some pics when I get to her and show you all the big difference it has made in the looks and fish-ability, changing the set up of the covers and where suports for the canopy now are.
Next major decesion is what winch to go with for the anchor and then to bite the bullet and blow the last of the Toy Fund.

looking good Tony, you might need to have an open day to show it off in the flesh.
When I was in NZ I was looking at the bottom mapping software and it would be well worth having in your boat. All of the mapped bottom I saw was major structure rising from hundreds of metres and looked very impressive. I'd be interested to see how it mapped shallower, less obvious bottom like shallow dhuie reefs etc.
What programs are you looking at for this?

Makes a long drive from Ascot [if its the AQscot I'm thinking of] to Fremantle before you can even think about wetting a line.
Have you put in an application for a pen in the new marina being built down Coogee way. Been a while since I was down that way so don't know if its open yet.

big thing for me is that it
big thing for me is that it closer to home. I live up in Swan Valley, so to just pop down to do a few things or a river cruise is a long drive either way.
We also want to spend more time as a family on the river, so it's win on one hand and loose a little on getting to the sea.
Then again at 4-30am in the morning there not many radar water police out there....lol...
other thing is it's lot cheaper than a pen in Freo by a long shot! Also no club fees etc..

at the Ascot keys side, but
at the Ascot keys side, but it' not far from the Bayswater slip and old boat works ( just across the river).
Other thing is it is always an effort to get a working bay stack on weekend for work I want to do in the boat at the stackers. They busy on weekends and I can't get time off in the week to get to the boat during daylight.
So being able to work on the boat ( except under the water line) 24/7 is a big plus for me.
Also I can just sit on the tub after work with a beer in my hand and watch the sun go down over the river...NICE!!!!

hi tony
my mate has got an old crusier moored over at the malands slipway, it has got a for sale sign on it, unsure of what type boat it is... about 30ft with black side curtains
anyway, as you said, it is very enjoyable getting down there with a few beers to pass the arvo away helping him out sometimes.
i have also got some big bream not to far from there, so always good to wet a line.
when i am down there i will kepp an eye out for ya, when do you get the pen?
cheers ron

we expecting the pens to be released to us at the end of July.
They did a big upgrade this year and they opening up the new pens from mid July, so my 8m pen would part of the second block.
Nice thing is it's on the way from Perth metro back home, so after work pop in are much easier now.
cheers

On Sunday got only about an hours work done, due to pressing issues at home over riding my plans ( as usual.... :-( )
but did get the front end of the fairing installed on the tranducer and lowered it a further 50mm to get real clean water now.
I still need to sand down the sealant on the edges and clean up the shape a little, then a coat of anitfouling paint.

lol Alfred... don't follow to close mate... ;-)
if you look at most game boat set-up's, the run the full fairing units even deeper in the water.
I'm after a nice clean deep water picture at 30 knots and with 450hp on tap in the tub, I don't really worry about any extra drag....lol

we took the tub for a run on
we took the tub for a run on sunday arvo when the wind dropped off nicely, out across the sound , then back and up the river and back to Freo.
Really going well now and some fine tuning on a few things still to do, but then again is it ever finished???lol
next step is a set of trim tabs to correct a port biase when under way with water tank empty! and three passanger sitting on the starboard side.
with some luck will move in two weeks time to the new pen, as I got the keys this weekend, but could not get a chance to get the move done and still need to make up mooring ropes.

if the hulls sound, then
if the hulls sound, then it's a dam good price.
rip out those old motors, put in a Yanmar Diesel,
give it a two pack and new seats, clears and polish and you got a fine tub.
i'd guess you could do a new motor for $35k, another $10k to get her nice, thats $50k to have a bloody nice 8m boat with a super ecconomical diesel in it.
or put a pod on the back, put on a 300~350hp Yammie or pair of 200hp Suzies, and you got a super flier.

I know of many big Suzi's
I know of many big Suzi's 225 & 250's with over 3000 hrs on them with pro-fishing boats and no issues.
I'd say Suzuki and Yamaha have to be the two most reliable motors out there.

well got around to it
well got around to it finally, trim-tabs when on yesterday. Later when I have saved some cash, I'll upgrade them to auto-tabs with a set of Lenco arms on them. But for now, manual set up to off-set the list at speed.
Will test out next weekend.

yip 12 x 9 inch Minkota tabs, I can upgrade later to the
Minkota or Lenco actuators
They well made and very easy to fit. No sharp edges to cut you on when diving either or cut a fishing line on.

How about this one? I found it a little redundant (misleading?) that they described it as a flybridge cruiser.

Well moved into the new pen
Well moved into the new pen yesterday, had a nice cruise & blast...lol up mthe river, nothing like chasing ski boats in your battleship...lol.
Tub went well, had a little issue that turned out to be a false alarm ( much to my relief) when oil pressure dropped away, turned out to be a loose wire on the guage...
Must say the river was perfect and with the Targa Rail on the go, sat off Perth City for awhile and watched the boys smoke up the tires, before heading back to the pen.
Next big job is to fit the new remote spot light system, work on a relocation of the batteries, so I can get the wet fish box's back ( they where used to store the batteries... what a waste! :-O ) lol
more pics to come soon
Tony
