Dongara Advice

 Hi Guys

Heading up to Dongara next week for a week and will be taking up a 6.6 trailcraft. Never been up there before, never been crayfishing before and i dont know a heap about the place. There isnt alot of info in terms of boat fishing on fishwrecked either and ive got a few questions. Im after any advice if possible from you guys that have been up there before. Whats the weather like up there mid april? Knowing my luck it will be blowing its a$$ off. Ive got a couple of pots from my mate which im going to put different floats on for the week with my number (assuming this is legal, he hasnt engraved his number on the pots). Is it worth taking the pots up? What depths as im wondering how much rope ill need. As for bottom bashing is there much out there? If so how far out until i can find some decent ground to sound around in? Can i just say im not after your marks at all, just general areas or advice to start with as im a complete newbie. Happy to put in the hours.

Dongara Port Dennison

Tue, 2015-04-07 12:15

Hi Merdel12 im originally from a small town called Mingenew which is only 30 mins away, my mum and Dad live in Port Dennison so I have fished there for 40+ years, Generally April is really good up there (like most of wa really) I was up there recently on the new moon fishing was still good but bit quieter than normal due to the dirty water from the river.
Cray pots: have always had luck north from marina don't go to deep stay in side main reef break 10 to 12 meters max depth you should do ok.
Fishing Dongara is very good for Dhufish without having to travel to far if you head out main passage turn left (south) go down behind reef maybe 2 to 5 kms all good ground again don't go to deep all under 18m the 12 to 15m mark will do fine I use bait plastics and jigs have had best catch rate on large white plastics.
In that area you will catch Dhufish baldies and trout.
If you want to head out further south west in 40m you will find the pinky grounds if you get sick of catching dhufish.
The Dongara hotel in the main street of Dongara has the best feed in town. Good luck Enjoy.
ps// important note best days ive had is Anchor and light burley they will come to you without driving around all day.

agree you don't have to go far for fish

we took a tinny out one afternoon and caught a size dhu and couple of pinks 50m from the entrance to the harbour on the reef

Concur with Humpback

Stayed there 2 weeks ago. Most amateur potters werent going very far out and as mentioned north of marina to roughly where there appears a natural jetty/reef just north. Had the binoculars on them and some appeared to do well. Was shore based and north of the river in the best close to town whiting spot at Seaspray was crap due to the dirty water. Wouldnt have minded a night fish for Mullas as I recon it would be a good time.

Since we had to walk (carrying a few cans off amber fluid) we settled for the South Beach. Fisheries rocked up and told us nobody fishes there other than with a haul net, but we easily got a feed of whiting and some herring (which we returned as both dont like the taste). Boat was not an options as the day before departure to Denham the breaks on the trailor failed, but NEXT time I think it would be a great spot.

By now I would think the river would have cleared and water colour would be back to normal.

Good luck.

Dongara - September 2018 Query

Wed, 2018-09-19 13:11

Hi All

I'm heading up there this Friday for the upcoming school holidays

There is a motorsport event on Sunday that will block off the Port Denison Public Boat Ramp

Is there a beach launching option available in the vicinity ?

if not where is the nearest boat launching option ?

Thanks in advance

Dave

theyre blocking off the esplanade access for the event.

Hopefully not the public ramp but the girl I talked to today indicated no access to either public or commercial...

 The public ramp will almost

The public ramp will almost definitely be out of action, in the last few years they have run the denison sprint they have opened the commercial ramp.

If not you can launch on the northern end of the beach inside the marina closest to the boat pens.
