Dragonfly to power

Hi,

Created a new thread to get some help.  Purchased the Raymarine Dragonfly earlier in the week and installed it today.  Thought the connection to power would be pretty simple but no power to the unit yet.  Am I missing something?

There was a cable leading from my battery to the other sounder I had on the boat before.  This had positive, negative and I assume the earth?  I hooked these up on the Dragonfly and can't seem to get power to the unit.  There is definitely juice in the cable from the battery, as it has sparked when touching the boat as I was threading it through to the bow.

Feeling pretty stupid at the moment.

Any advice?

It was working on the other sounder and the guy at Whitworths said it should be fine.

grey/black

just wondering why the grey and black cores are together? ie does the manual tell you what they are for.  12v wiring doesnt have an earth and all earths are green/yellow cable

I would also be checking that fuse if the cable sparked on the boat it is more than likely blown

Still trying

Thanks Rig, black and grey were together because the manual said ii was a dedicated shield/drain wire for connection to the RF ground point.  I don't know what RF ground point means...

Also 'on vessels without a dedicated RF ground system the shield/drain should be connected directly to the negaitive battery terminal'

I'll get out and get a new fuse this morning and see if that is the problem

If you have an ali boat.

If you have an ali boat. Which is assume you do... DO NOT earth anything to the hull/boat itself... Everything must go back to the battery. If you earth to the hull your boat will now have electrical current running through it which will cause rapid electrolysis!!!

Would the batt have to be also earthed to the hull to complete tbe circuit to get current running through the hull , furuno manual says to earth to dash now im confused lol

The neg and drain should be

The neg and drain should be connected together to the neutral bar! check blown fuse as 5a is recommended even though 3a should be sufficient. Check for 12v with multimeter and make sure its clipped in properly to the dragon from memory it was a bit fiddly

Yes

Yes the Grey and Black can be twitched togeather if you dont have a ground point on the boat . ( as the manual shows )

You say the power wires sparked on the hull so they have power . Maybe when they sparked, they poped another fuse from the battery or switch panel ?

The blue and brown wires look like they are a common power lead with the plugs cut of. They could be corroded inside the shield and the blue wire might not actualy be the positive . Have you tested it with a test light or multimetre ?

When wireing up the instuments  etc on a boat you realy should dissconect the battery terminals so you don't get sparks,  this could damage all your instruments that are connected at the time.

These are the first things i would be looking at . Then i would use a new peice of wire , with a fuse on the positive and run it straight to the unit from the batery to make sure it actualy works .

Cheers Grant

All fixed

Thanks guys,

Swallowed my pride and headed off to Muhling Marine on Saturday morning.  The fuse had blown.  However, it was good to chat to them as they had all the gear to replace and fix what was required.

For other researchers, the fuse was under the dash, guys at Muhling Marine said it should be as close as possible to the power source (battery) in case a problem started in the wire leading to the device and may start a fire.  They were very helpful and gave advice to the positioning of my transducer and other electrical organisation on the boat.  A delayed start but was very excited to see the dragonfly powered up.

Thanks again for input and advice.
