Drum lines along the coast

Heard on the radio today the federal govt want to put drum lines in along the coast all the way to margaret ricer from lancelin and the state govt to foot the bill.

Any thoughts on this one. Wad mentioned that whoever controls these lines were to tow big sharks out deep and dump them there

You mean release them Russ?

One has to be careful on these delicate subjects such as these, you'll have every true waterman from the Antarctic to the Arctic wrapping the big whites in cotton wool to keep them out of harms way...

I say the not so smart drum lines should be deployed north of Kalbarri while they are at it.....

question I would ask the brains behind this is at a cost supposed to be around 7 million $,

what exactly is it going to achieve ??

releasing them 500 metres or 5km away out to sea is supposed to help by doing what exactly ??

do they not know these sharks can swim ?? and can easily swim back again ?? and if there not handled correctly in the dehooking and removal. /towing , or re releasing , how many might be released potentially injured ? if so what impact will be gained by having some injured large sharks released ?/ will they swim away to die ??or be less fit to hunt there natural prey and look for easier slower prey nearby ??

the whole thing feels like a bit PR exercise so the unthinkers will feel safer and greener imo ..

so its called smart drum lines ?? struggling with the smart bit myself lol ..

Nothing to fear

the Fisheries are so shit at drum line captures that no sharks will be caught even with 70,000 set lines.

the real issue is how to keep kids from being eaten while the kids enjoy the coast line. I can’t see any answers short of protected swimming areas.

Too weak to do anything

nobody should worry - both governments are too weak to do anything useful or helpful. Would be great to at least trial this as a matter of urgency. And order an additional 10k of them for Coral Bay / Exmouth i say!

i dont think it will work at all. the govt need to allow a couple of shark licences to cull some of the smaller sharks and in turn there will be more feed for the larger sharks therefore they shouldnt need to come in and attack people for feed

REALLY

That thought process might be a bit flawed . The larger sharks that come in close come in for their main diet of seals/whales not because the smaller sharks have eaten their food out wider.

 my theory is more sharks

Thu, 2018-07-05 18:09

my theory is more sharks less food . less food sharks need to go elsewhere for food. hense theye are showing up more often in shallow water where people swim and dive. just got to look at whats happening up north. the sharks are more prevelant than years back and now following boats to claim their feed

With the east coast experts telling WA what to do about the sharks and throwing money at the people of WA it must be an election due soon.

Relocate a shark?

Sun, 2018-07-08 07:45

How do you stop it from returning? When the population of sharks increases so will the range and locations they will inhabit/travel in search of food. I do not think sharks target humans as a source of food but some will bite, chew and swallow humans because they can, i.e croc's are no different. Rogue/Problem croc's are removed from the location and either placed into croc parks or euthinazed this is due to the fact that the croc will make every effort to return to it's home/feeding grounds. Some sharks also have learnt that a boat is a potential source of food.

I don't think there is any one perfect solution but more information is required. Let there be game fishing for sharks with a tag release and information sent to relevant person(s) if a few don't survive so shall it be. Once a particular shark is identified as a problem have a bounty put on it's head. Each individual undertaking water activities need to take what ever precaution to reduce the possibility of getting attacked especially when surfing or diving. Federal and state governments need to work together to put in place shark barriers/deterrents at popular beaches.

There will never be a one fix all except kill them all.

Just open the season for a few years. Put in a licence fee and to obtain a licence you must show you have the means to safety deal with it...min boat size off shore etc. no shore based as don’t want them hanging around beaches. Make sure any captured are killed humanly and then measured etc for reasearh purposes. Once enough have been caught/culled close the season again.
