E-GEE reel help
Submitted by danno on Mon, 2011-06-06 18:49
Hey all tackle guru's.
I was wondering if you can purchase a Double handled E-GEE handle. I've never seen them in Australia but they look pretty cool so im wondering if you can get them here.
Has anyone used a double handled spinning reel? What did you think?
Cheers danno.

sorry to be pessimistic
sorry to be pessimistic mate, but I don't think it would make much of a difference. I think its just the tackle marketing machine rolling along, taking all those that will fall for a new fad... (and I've been victim of it at times too)
would like to hear from those that use them what the idea is behind the two handles. I have noticed quiute a few reels in the US and Japan have the 2 handle option

Paddle Pop
Already been done.
15 or so years ago the small stradics all came with the double (paddle pop) handle.

Double handle
A high percentage of Reels in the UK have been double handle for a good few years now, but the trend was going back to single handles, got an old Stradic 4000(jap one) twin handle and when you hold it off the rod and spin it fast its perfectley balanced, but when actually fishing with them not alot of difference. Now since i been here and had to buy a whole new set of tackle as only fished fresh water in the UK (miss the Barbel) I prefer the single handle as they dont seem to get in the way as much double handles, especially an the boat.
Lifes a game but fishing is serious !!!

I think you guys are missing the point
An e-gee reel with the double handle increases your chance of grabbing a handle by 100% when a large squid takes your lure by surprise, starts pulling drag and you have to grab the handle while not looking. For that alone its worth spending at least $100 on a new reel handle specifically for squid (dont skimp, buy quality).

exactly, I don't know about you, but I normally fumble around trying to find my reel handle when I get that big strike, sometimes I go to turn it the wrong way

sorry if you don't like my sense of humour Danno, I'm not being personal, I just don't its necesary to spend a fortune on EGI gear and I don't think you need EGI branded gear to get onto them regularly.
Don't take me too seriously mate, I'm only trying to save your money to buy Stellas and Saltigas.

well think about it Danno
and ask yourself a few questions.
When you reel in, do you hold one handle or 2? What advantage (if any) do you percieve having a double handle would give?
My answers would be 1 and none.
Think of it in terms of using a baitcaster because many of them have a double handle - reality is you only use one half of the handle, I've never seen any hold both handles at the same time and reel in: the second handle is superflous.
But if you really want one, get one.

I find it makes twitching
I find it makes twitching something a whole lot easier and at the same time the lure stays in the water for alot longer if that makes sense.

I have no idea how much it is!
I was being facetious in my first post mate. If you want it and think it looks the business, then get one.
FWIW, you can buy and e-gee reel with double handle (with the wooden knobs) brand new in aust for $162 from bluewater. Or maybe PM HonSu and see what he can do for you.
