Electrical problem on my boat

I took the boat out last night to do some squidding, about 30min in I lost all power to the gps, radio and everything else. These are the things that I had on when it happened, top and side nav lights, deck and cabin lights, sounder, gps, stereo, VHF radio.

One of the squid sprayed some ink so I turned on the deck wash and then everythink went black.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

If deck wash on same circuit

Sun, 2010-03-14 09:38

That is a hell of a current draw on a single circuit - but I would put money that the fuse is blown and the culprit is the deck wash motor down to earth (knackered)

Had the same happen to me and rewired the deck was onto a separate fuse.

i would say check the fuses and rewire the deck wash. most of the time from memory the fuses will be up under the dash

fuses

Sun, 2010-03-14 14:16

i would say that you have every thing on one fuse, which is not good or you have blown the master fuse that supplys power to your switch panel, the motor does come of the switch panel and would be direct connected to the battery.

You should check that you have a switch panel with several different size fuses and that all the equipment loading should add up ( amp rating) to less than the master fuse to prevent re-ocurrence

fuses

i work at  with stuff like this and it is most likely that it has all been wired together... just the deck was wire, and put a fuse between it and then add it to your switch panel:)

Simo You should really have

Simo

You should really have each item switched separately ,and each switch or circuit should have a fuse suitable for the current draw on that circuit.

Its not good to have everything grouped up together for the reason you just came across .......If something %hits itself it takes everthing out.

If the deck wash was the last thing on ,there's a good chance that is this that is either faulty or it together with everything else turned on has drawn too much current for the fuse.

idea??

Tue, 2010-03-23 19:41

check to see what size fuse you hav just after the battery in the circuit as you can change it out with a circuit breaker/trip switch so if you do over load the circuit  you can get power bak again by resetting and taking the load off of the circuit without loosing lights etc for the rest of the night...dont know if thats any help but its something i have been advised on doin...
