Electrical probs on the tub
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2010-01-24 10:57
just put the alternator back in the tub and found the starter was siezed, fixed that and just rewired it back up. now the prob i have is there seems to be power drawing from the battery even tho the isolater is switched off.none of my electrics are working so the batteries are dead flat and thats only 2 weeks it has done that.one other prob is i need it explained to me in blonde terms as i wouldnt have a clue what is what in the electrics side of things apart from basics. just want to be able to start the thing so i can check if the alternator is putting out the correct volts

thought about that but they
thought about that but they arent that old. even when they were new something seemed to drain them .originally i thought the alt was shot so had it tested and it was putting out 14 volts on the bench but before when it was in the boat it was only putting out between 11 and 12 . so something tells me there is something screwy going on

It won't put out 14 volts rig up
on the boat russ as it would cook the battery in no time. If your battery was fully charged 12 to 13 volts is good. Just use your multi meter to check out the power cable [from battery] to see if it is running to earth somewhere along the line. If it is not then i would test the batteries. Good luck with it Russ.

If you have
an amps capable muliti meter it could help. Plug the red line into the amps section then turn the meter over to amps which should be 10 amp capable. With charged battery diconect the positive side of the battery then place your red lead on the + side of battery then place the black lead on the power out line. If something is draining your battery when every thing is switch off then is will show amps being drawn. If no amps are drawn then it gets back to your power supply hence your battery.

make sure
no wires are touching maybe its earthing or short circuiting causing the battery to be flat.
charge them up again and see if they go flat.
with this problem i dont think its you alternator which is causing this problem i think wires are earthing or shorting somehow and draining the battery as you said that the battery always seemed to be draining
try what out wide said
