Engine cable extension size??

gday guys,

redently got a new 200 Honda fitted to my project boat and I’m half way through moving  the batteries Into the enclosed  cabin. Looking at around 8m of cable prob around 6 but not too sure about the size of cable to use for the extension. This is the size of the cable that it has already looks about 10mm single core and 5-6mm single core also.

any help would be amazing. Thanks guys.

Hi Paul, it's 2awg on the large positive and negative and 4awg on the smaller positive

Ideally i would consider running new cables rather than making a join but I guess if it's joined properly and protected from the elements it will be ok. I don't like seeing joins in the main backbone though.

Yeah I fully agree with ya

Yeah I fully agree with ya but it will be done properly and soldered together for proper join and heat shrinked also. And there is no way and way or other elements can get into it.

Cool mate, sounds like it

Cool mate, sounds like it will be ok.i would definitely go to l &h (the electrical supplier)  and get a length of their good heatshrink.its about 5 times the wall thickness of the normal shitty heatshrink. It has adhesive on the inside and forms the best seal and won't unshrink like the normal stuff does.plus it's super tough and will be good insulation over the join.

I've just made some new battery cables and have used this stuff over the terminals and was very impressed with it.costs a lot more but at least it will last

A quick tip.

Before you heat shrink the soldered joint, bruch some PVC cement, (reticulation glue), on it. Let it dry and then the heat shrink over the top. Forms a flexible but thorough seal so salt water cant get in. Did this to the jions on mt trailer wiring and had no probs with it. But no substitute for a comlete one peice cable. Good luck..

Don't confuse wire size with insulation

Sat, 2019-11-02 10:07

When sizing the wire, don't confuse the size iof the nsulation with the size (cross sectional area) of the copper core.  The wire sizing charts refer to cross sectional area of the copper, not copper plus insulation.
