Engine Warranty - 30hp Etec
Submitted by Work to Fish on Thu, 2020-01-02 11:22
Hi Guys, I have a question about what's covered under new engine warranty - I purchased a new 30hp e-tec in Feb 2017 and it's covered by a 3 year (or 300hr) warranty.
I have noticed a build-up of salt crystals on the what I think is the cooling manifold - photos attached.
Presumably this was caused by a leaking gasket? If so, would this likely be covered under warranty?
I have tried calling the 4 e-tec reps in WA and all are closed until Monday, so was hoping someone could let me know (from experience) whether or not this is likely to be covered - either way, it's got to be fixed.
Cheers
Shane

Has it been getting its annual service/inspections? The original promotion of no service for 3 years was based on freshwater use more a US thing than here.
Have you had a look at the warranty document? https://www.evinrude.com.au/site/DefaultSite/filesystem/documents/Evinrude%20Maintenance%20Guide%20book%20May%2019-WEB.pdf

Thanks Tim.
I believe the annual inspection requirements have been met as Ive had the engine serviced twice over the 3 years by the e-tec rep and service agent who installed the engine.
I see from the warranty document that normal wear and tear is not coverd under warranty - would this be considered normal wear and tear?

I wonder if that gasket has been changed at one of your services? Warranty often doesnt cover them as they can be classed as a consumable.
Might be worth checking what was done with the guy that serviced it

That is a fair bit of corrosion. Mine is 10 years old and has no signs of that.

Sorry I cant help with the warranty question....Unless its leaking or broken then i"m not sure they will do much without charging you.

Thanks guys.The rest of the
Thanks guys.
The rest of the engine is clean as a whistle - damage is limited to the area in the pics, so can only assume its a leaky gasket, not spray getting under the cover.
Brock - my brother is pretty handy with engines and said gives his engine a light sprays his with CRC too - I haven't tried that due to being under warranty still (i.e. 1 month left) and didn't want any excuses for warranty to get knocked back due to something I've done.
Only work that has been done so far (that I recall) is:
1) replace impeller and entire water pump housing (engine overheated and cooked everything - onboard computer failed to sound the alarm and the hot symbol did not light up on the dash board)
2) on board computer (EMM) was replaced (per above, was found to be defective)
Not sure if any other parts were touched during the above repairs - both of the above repairs were covered under warranty.

The overheating problem with that model is a known fault, they fit an inproved housing in the USA to make better
but not completely fix the problem.

If you have one month of
If you have one month of warranty left, i would push the point.
It is a hard one though you could argue design fault though i guess if it is designed for that to happen (maby they didnt think about the effects of salt water on metal?) then it would be normal wear and tear...
Good luck through i would present the motor and ask the question.

Agree with swompa
They can't take away your birthday and they can't turn you into a green frog, the worst thing that can happen is they will say no.
