New Trailer

Hi FW Crew.

I'm looking at purchasing a used fibreglass boat, around 7.5m length, but the trailer it's on is pretty much kaput. I know I've seen recent posts on Tezzas Trailers and the like, but can't seem to use the search function to look them up.

Anyone got a ballpark price on a new 3.5t rated trailer, either ally or C section galvanised? Just need to factor in to my sums so I know if it's worth making an offer.

Cheers all.

BD.

You'd likely be looking at at least $13K, probably more.

I paid $12700, IIRC, for a new Easytow 2900kg ATM rated, 2 years ago. Stainless calipers, , heavy hot rolled channel construction. Good setup, that mob up in Wangara were similar, for alloy, at the time, as far as I could work out.

Thanks Ranmar, yeah I figured it would definitely be more than $10K. Any reason you went for steel over alloy if pricing was similar?

 Alloy has a major tendancy

Alloy has a major tendancy for stress cracking Browndog, I can't count the amount of Ali boat trailers I've done repairs on for that very problem.

Mate just bought a tezzas for his 680 patriot. Just over 12 was the figure he told me.

I'm not sure. Is that something that usually comes with a new trailer?

 Considering something that's

Considering something that's happened recently, If I was going to get a new trailer built and ex mild steel I'd be insisting on local product with material certs considering the amount of coin these trailers cost. The certs cost nothing and can be supplied with the material when it's bought in. Like I mentioned before on a different thread imported steel will only come with a certificate of conformity which I'd screw up and throw in the bin as it means shit.

If the builder wants to charge slightly more for local product then it's worth the investment for piece of mind.

Was it a tezzas that failed?

Was it a tezzas that failed? Was poor quality imported steel the issue?

I would say no as I am

I would say no as I am confident that Tezza uses C channel and the trailer that failed was (that was discussed here) was RHS or SHS

Why not ally?

Sat, 2020-01-04 07:26

A couple of reasons. Weight was not a consideration-ally can be useful if you are pushing up against the old 3.5t ( or whatever your rating is) , saves some significant KG. But I wasn't. And ally always seems to come with torsion suspension, which I don't like, due to the totally unpredictable rate of failure, and the inability to bodge it up by the side of the road if it does.  And, as Sea-Kem says, they are just not as strong. I do some horrible tracks. Yes, it is C-channel, or , more accurately, hot-rolled channel. And angle--the only SHS is on the drawbar, which generally is not getting wet, and is easy to monitor.

What's the equivilancy for strength, Sea-Kem, for aluminium vs mild steel? I know it will vary with the particular alloy used, and the method of forming, but isn't it something like 3:1, ie, the ally will need to be 3 times as thick for the equivilent steength in mild steel.?

I reckon you're close to the mark, but I'll ask my engineer as he loves questions like that.

 Browndog,

I purchased a new trailer from Tezza's 12 months ago, trailer was rated to 3.3 tonne and cost was $10,700. All Tezza's are steel, he doesn't do ally.
