Etiquette on the water
Well i know this has been covered many times however what i experienced yesterday was by far the worst i have experienced in all my years of fishing.
Fishing a spot. Boat does a lap around me & then fishes 60m-80m away. Maybe had spot already, not particularly concerned but a little put out so i moved away.
A while later he blasted past me 30-40m off & continued on. We then moved on & bugger me a bit later this guy came & sat 20m away from me right in my drift!!
Couldn't believe it. Mentioned that there was a whole lot of ocean to fish in to which the reply was, i have this spot also! Was not questioning whether he did or didnt have the spot but just the pure arrogance & disrespect for other people on the ocean.
We then moved again a long way off out of his sight.
I know we dont own the ocean but if someone is on a spot you may have surely you would move on rather than plonk right next to them in their drift?
Puts a bitter taste in your mouth when just trying to have a good day on the water.
Anyway was a great day on the water & bagged out with the biggest being a 850mm dhu.

Theres some people that just
Theres some people that just dont give a shit out there. Have had plenty of dodgy encounters. Seems like an asshole to me. It gets very frustrating.
I passed one boat (Lets call it 'Leo' wanker) who was fishing 500m from the spot i was heading. I got there and did a drift while getting ready, I re position and in the meantime
leo had dropped anchor right on my drift so i would drift right into him. To me that is not on. He reckoned we must have the same spot.
There has to be some unwritten rules like surfing but no one will ever agree on them.

Maybe should have asked him
Maybe should have asked him "what other spots have you got so I dont interfere with your fishing any further".

Mate it happens to me all the time up here mainly due to visitors not knowing where to go. Last week I was anchored up and had a boat do three circles around us the anchored up right beside us within casting distance. Asked if he wanted me to move so he could have my spot but they would not look or respond. We up anchored and went elsewhere. Really pisses me off

Should have just gone and sat on a patch of sand and see if he follows then, see if he says he has this spot too, a featureless piece of sand.

I recall years ago being in
I recall years ago being in a ring of boats around a well known snapper wreck in Warnbro sound some 30 boats and a clown decides he would anchor right in the middle, he must have collected enough sinkers that were launched into his boat and finally left, some people test your patience.

Did precisely that off Garden Island
13 miles out and out of nowhere a boat comes slightly upwind of me, stops and starts drifting precisely my line. Pulled in the sea anchor, motored and found some featureless sandy bottom and started a new drift......put some baits down to make it look like I was serious, trouble was the rods all went off simultaneously, three rods, six baits, two double headers of double figure dhuies, the third had two but one broke off, the remaining fish just short of a pb at 18kg......I guess I had the last laugh on the "drop in drop kick"

Cockburn Sound
Few weeks ago the wife and I went for a squid in the sound, set up a drift across a weed line and we were casting ahead of the drift.
No other boats were near us at the time, next minute a 6m boat heading 20+ knots heads past me, pulls up within casting distance and decides he will start a drift straight in front of me. Found it a little bit funny, the whole of the sound to squid in and wants to sit 30m in front of my drift.

I'm reasonably new to fishing/boating and my question is what is the consensus on what would be a reasonable distance to be away for somebody and be considered not invasive. In meters....? I have had other guys drifting near me on different drift lines 200m away and I wasn't bothered...

While this sort of thing
While this sort of thing doesnt affect me too much I can understand the frustration.
But these sort of threads inevitably draw someone like the above comment.
And almost as inevtiably, when you have a look?
Its someone who has never posted a trip report, in 4 years...
I wonder if its because all their pics have other boats in the background?

Bragging, sharing knowledge and experience or just corresponding with ya mates, whatever you want to call it.
Fishwrecked wouldnt be jackshit without people posting pics and stories up.
Theres another WA forum where they love those sort of comments, oh hang on, its dead now because the people who liked that soon found it wasnt much fun and most slipped over here quietly instead
Why not have a go at some meaningful contributions?

From what I have seen most
From what I have seen most will give a rough area, depth, bait used, conditions and what time they were there.
And answer any questions about the catch.
They are not going to give you waypoints, put the bait on the hook for you, hold the line until a fish bites and then hand it over !!

Well that's never been my argument, as the thread says it's all about ettiquette and manners. Don't put your boat on the forward or aft of my boat while I'm fishing a spot without being invited and there'd never be a problem. If someone's on a spot I have then I go somewhere else, pretty simple. There's no ownership of spots out there as we all know.

Sounds like your bragging now Derek, but got nothing to back it up so who knows.
What you are doing is called trolling, and its not part of actual fishing.
Why not just have a go at chucking up some pics and contributing?
You may just get to know some decent blokes here, and some who you'll probably never meet but would still go well out of their way to give you a hand if in need.
There are a lot of decent blokes on here, and they deserve better than snide comments etc

It's happened to me i drive up to them and stop about a boat length inside them throw the sea anchor out turn your back to them and start fishing. They usually get thr message. General rule is first to the spot means it's yours until you move to your next. if someone is on it then try somewhere else. Not rocket science just common courtesy sadly lacking these days.

If I'm on good ground
I usually move off my drift line if someone looks like they're coming to me and start drifting over nothing ground. Sometimes they'll come and ping me but it's happened once or twice that they might've had the spot already marked or are just a bloody good guess. Either way I move on.

I don't have a problem with it myself I would actually rather they came said hi ask how I'm going see how there going . Bet you have all passed a boat and wondered how there doing ., wouldn't it be nice if you could actually stop and have a chat. More than likely they have the mark anyway . Or when you see a boat drift off it have a chat. The social aspect of fishing has gone it's all about he pinged me I'm going to put his photo on fb hes driving to close to where I'm fishing pinger..

I get what you are saying & yes the social side is very lacking these days. I always wave to other boats but not many waves back. We are all very protective of our spots that everyone else has any way!!
Just a respect thing if they do what i mentioned in original post & that in there lies the problem. Respect.

If I am chasing hezza with the kids I'll always anchor up near the other boats as it makes sense to keep them all in the same area but I'll always make sure I position myself so that my berley trail is going towards the boats that were there first within reason. Just fishing anywhere in
Just fishing anywhere in general be it landbased or on a boat. Most people want to be on there own or a small group with family and friends to get away from life for a bit.. it's understandable when people including myself get upset about someone dropping in your "territory " it's seen as arrogant.
But if the person/persons come over introduce themselves and ask if they don't mind them fishing near by or what ever.
I'm sure 90% of people wouldn't mind and probably would enjoy the company.

I was thinking about this,
I was thinking about this, and I just want to be clear on something.
So, if I go to a known wreck site for a fish in the sound, and there is 1 boat already at that site, then I should just go somewhere else ?
Seems to me that If I anchored say 50M+ from that boat, there's no harm. I wouldnt mind someone anchoring near me, as long as they werent within casting distance, and there's no chance of drifting into each other.
Am I missing something ?

You could put it like this
You could put it like this ie : D9 and Mewstones etc when people are typically fishing large schools it's like a mosh pit at a festival everyone's on ecstasy and it's a free for all , go for it .
They are talking about when you are 10+ kms offshore drifting / anchored over a isolated spot hoping to get a fish .. akin to going to some small pub to get lucky , putting the work in conversing with a lady for a while and offering her a drink and then some prick from no where pulls up a stool between you both and starts whiteanting by hitting on her himself . Breaks the unwritten Aussie code of conduct is poor form and warrants a slapping about .

That sums it up
Like most blokes I move off the spot if I see a boat approaching, last Saturday we got a little too focussed on the bite and sounder, look down wind 50m and there's a couple of blokes in an old glass boat watching us pull up snapper, that was a hard won spot 45kms off shore, yeah they might have the spot already but I doubt it.

I dont comment much at all
I dont comment much at all on this site. But , i get pissed off too, when people are ignorant of our personal space .Most,
if not all areas within a 20 nautical mile from any boatramp, every trailerboat fisherman, should expect someone out there, to have that ground on their electronics , that your boat has . Drive around Perth in a car these days,.. a lot of ignorant drivers, a-holes, f-u people..,that just dont think , just dont care. Expect some to have a boat !
I have experienced everything all you fishos list, and more.
I dont suffer fools lightly. Its not worth losing your shirt over, a day on the water here in W.A is gold.Fish are a bonus. If someones dogging you, motor up and say gday,
you might be surprised with a friendly experience, maybe a novice ? If met with a negative response, well right there, the law of the jungle, but remember , not worth losing your shirt over, ever! Move on. Distance from tards is calming. If you are good at finding fish, it should not be a problem, lotsa water out there.
