Exmouth Campsites

Hi Guys,

Heading up to Exmouth in a few weeks and was wondering about decent campsites to stay.

In the past we have always stayed at Ningaloo station which is really nice and a great place however the drive off the highway to the campsite towing a boat takes about an hour and a half which when you are coming from Perth makes the journey that little bit too hard.

Can anyone suggest any places to camp in the area. Really am chasing somewhere not to far off the beaten track and great to stay.

We are completely self sufficient campers and dont need any ammeneties.

Also this is the first time we are going to be taking a reasonably big boat so would be very interested in hearing any suggestions on locations or places to fish/spearfish. Someone mentioned to me that inside the gulf is the way to go??

beach camping and big boat

beach camping and big boat launching don't really work that well up here. The national park is nice for camping but will be packed this time of year and spearing is a no-go. The Gulf is best to spear because the reef side is off limits to guns, but it has been dirty for ages so good luck there. Never been to Warrora so can't comment on boat launching down there but it is a nice stretch of coast.

Gladstone

If the extra 1.5 hrs is a problem coming from Perth, how about stop for a day's (or more!) fishing at Gladstone.  It's a bit more than half way between Perth and Exxy (about an hour before Carnarvon).  It is a nice little camp (even has new dunnies if you want to camp down that end), just costs a few bucks when the ranger comes around.  But the great thing about it is that it has a decent beach ramp for the boat and you are already in the east gulf of Shark Bay.  I think most guys leave the boat anchored safely overnight.  I've seen some decent sized boats go in there and some decent sized fish come out of there.  It breaks up the trip but doesn't cut into fishing time (use it as another place to fish), and it is only 5 km or so off the hwy on a (mostly) good dirt road.

I've never been on a boat out of there so can't help with the where to fish bit, but maybe someone on here can.

Gladstone Channels

They mostly fish in the channels join up and black snapper, cod etc are the main catches.

Because its in the eastern gulf pink snapper restrictions apply.
