exmouth cray fishing?
Submitted by niloc1984 on Sun, 2014-04-13 20:19
Im heading up to Exmouth for the easter break and have a couple of cray pots packed in the boat but cant seem to find any info?
1 Is it worth me taking them? My plan was to leave Tantabiddi in the morning and drop them just outside the reef then check/move them each day?
An advice on using pots up there would be great as I have no experience in cray fishing or Exmouth!
Thanks for your time guys

I'm going off memory, but as
I'm going off memory, but as far as I am aware, you cannot catch crays by scuba or pots in the ningaloo marine park total. I believe the only way you can get them is by free diving. 100% sure this is the case with scuba, 90% on the pots. Also, there are a few reds around, but I've been told the painted tend not to go into the pots. I can't seem to find the literature on this but in regards to scuba it is on the sign at the tandabiddi boat ramp.

Thanks for that, im going to call fisheries in the morning as it doesn't seem very clear, I was hoping someone on here had some experience with pots up there. Il post up what ever I find to clear it up for the next person, I just don't fancy jumping in with all those sharks!

Poke to fisheries today and
Poke to fisheries today and they said crazy pots are allowed everywhere except the sanctory zones. There is nothing on their web site or in writing as they only tell you what you can't do and not what you can do. They also said they don't advertise it as they don't want people bashing up the reef with pots. So fingers crossed il get a couple of crays over Easter!!!

waste of time money and effort
personally, I wouldn't even consider taking cray pots up there. you will waste your time and fuel, both carting a big bulky item over 2500km round trip, and plus farking around locating, checking, baiting, etc. well and truly a waste of time and effort, plus the painted and ornate crays are pretty much vegetarian, and wont go into pots.
if you are that keen to get crays up there, you'll have to get wet. don't worry about the sharks.

Agree
Too much hassle carting pots up and back and you'd have more chance of getting a feed diving for them as you could get either reds or painteds.
I'd be more worried about getting run over by another boat up there that time of year with all the tourists driving around in their new boats with no idea. Never been hassled by sharks too much and Ive dived there a fair bit.
