heading home from SWB I pretty much had the boat flat out when the over temp alarm came on I must admit it had been running at 4800rpm and some times more rpm for about 30 minutes when it came on , should I be worried ????????

yes you should be worried of
yes you should be worried of course, ignore an alarm at your peril.
Not sure what outboard you have but I dont know of many that should only be doing 4800rpm when flat out-is it over propped?
What sort of outboard is it?

Weed?
Lots of floating weed lately in area, particularly once inside Warnbro Sound. My alarm came on today due to motor over heating caused by weed blocking intake. Just suggesting another possible cause.

Weed
Happened to me the other day, weed was wrapped around the leg blocking the intake.

Ribbon weed over the intake
Was really bad on Friday even way offshore - if it is only a few strands you wont hear a change in pitch on the engine but it sure as hell will cause overheating - just come to a stop, put into reverse to clear and then off you go again a lower revs until the temp drops back to normal

Oil level?
My 40 yamaha will make the warning sound when the 2 stroke oil resiviour is low. If you have a 4 stroke then then it is probaly over heating
