exmouth sharks

Staying in exmouth for a few days and headed out on a charter today, my god this place sucks! Haha i understand it was a big cattle boat with 10 lines down at any given time but the sharks here are relentless everywhere we went. Hooked some ablosute hooters but had no chance against the masses of sharks. What does everyone do? Was it just a problem coz we were on a charter boat that makes a heap of  noise and stink? Or is it just exmouth? The fish that did come over the side were handlined up by the deckies, which just aint fishin in my books. Still had an awsome day on the water but woulda loved to at least see the brutes i was hooking.

Hand lines

are the purest form of fishing in my book. (Even though I mainly use a rod).

Exmouth and sharks go hand in hand and getting worse every year

 If you are sport fishing

If you are sport fishing ,tough luck.if you want a feed 200 hand line with gloves you get them in reel fast.

professional mackerel fishos in NQ use this method and don't have a shark problem.

12 days south of there and the Sharks were a nightmare, couldn't get a good fish past them unless we were deep dropping and even them they took some. They are getting way too well trained to an easy feed unfortunately.

 Wasn't really chasing a feed

Fri, 2016-04-15 19:16

Wasn't really chasing a feed or anything just wanted some fun, i just love a good tussle with a fish but when there is no chance at playing a fish before the noahs get it it seems not worth fishing. But the sharks were happy to let the red throats and charlies go, just the big good fish had no chance. They must have an aquired taste i guess. Anyone else think they should just start culling them or is that a little extreme. I flew up and havent really put much effort in, but if i drove up and towed a boat and heaps of gear and had to deal with it, i think id loose my shit.

sharks

Sat, 2016-04-16 08:08

the problem is well known and has been referred to members of Parliament and fisheries for action. Carnarvonite, who was a pro fisher from that area posted some time ago that there may be a proposal to reinstate shark fishing licenses for that coast to try to curb the impact on fishing tourism for those coastal communities. There are ways you can minimize their impact on your fishing but there is no doubt they are in plague proportions.  If you just keep bottom bouncing in the same area the sharks will simply follow your boat. I have found that you can only fish a spot until they turn up then move at speed to a completely diferent area or try trolling for billies, head inside the reef for skinny water fish or squid or head out deep dropping. Always something else you can do in exy to keep a line in the water. Lads posted on here not long ago sharks taking sailfish at the boat side. That would shit me completely. Heading up with the boat in 3 weeks to do battle with the finned maggots again. If I cant beat them will be my last trip there and will look for a different annual trip location.

sharks are out of control up

Sun, 2016-04-17 08:42

sharks are out of control up there. I have found more success getting past them by switching to electric if they are a problem. Takes some of the fun out of it but hey, what's fun about reeling up a red head or nothing at all!

I have just returned from a trip to the North / wallabies islands at the Abrolhos and the sharks are brutal at the moment compared to most trips we do.

No specific depths or hanging on particular ground, just everywhere.

Went out to deep drop in around 300 meters, had everything sorted except having baited hooks before heading out. Located ground within a few minutes, baited up and dropped.

Shark took the bait on the drop at 100 meters.....moved 16kms dropped again, hooked bottom fish raised him 20 meters and sharked....

So, moved away again, back to 100mtrs, dropped, hooked up on a nice fish, sharked 20mtrs from the boat.

Back to the shallow, big solid hook up on what I call for a Dhu, sharked......then the shark wouldn't leave the boat.

Hooked a small, 4 ft or so bronze whaler only to get him half way in to be eaten by a massive tiger.

all this is one mornings fishing!!!

Seems to be the same story at the moment all around, worst I have seen them up here.

One of the main reasons we tend to stick with the snapper winches for most charters. They get the fish off the bottom quickly without them getting too much attention. If we do start loosing fish then we up anchor and move but its not often a problem. If there is anyone using a rod, they are allways the firts to be sharked, and then proceed to wrap up the whole boat. But I am lead to belive they are much worse up there.

 Yeah i understand

Yeah i understand  completely but i feel that the concept of fishing is lost and it just becomes a barbarian meat sport. But gotta do what needs to be done i guess, adapt to the cards we're dealt.

Fishing vs Sport

Thu, 2016-04-21 10:15

Comes down to whether you are fishing for a feed or catching a feed.
If you are after a feed then don't stuff about using light gear like rods and reels but use heavy handlines or snapper winches to get your fish past the sharks and kill the fish in the process

If fishing for sport using lighter lines, rods and reels etc then expect to lose most fish to sharks fishing north of Kalbarri unless fishing deep over 200 metres and then barotrauma is going to kill the fish anyway
