FAD Marlin
Submitted by adam.steff on Mon, 2011-02-28 13:41
Raised a Marlin, thinking it was a Black, on Friday out at the FADs. Unfortunately broke our line after a brief struggle and spending a lot of time out of the water. Has anyone got some guidance on fighting techniques reference letting it run or trying to slow it down with drag, and more importantly driving the boat. I have heard of chasing them down but unsure how or when.

Keep the fish at "2 o'clock"
Keep the fish at "2 o'clock" and chase it (stand up). This way the driver of the boat can see where the fish / line is. There is little chance of landing the fish if you dont chase it.

I rarely take the boat out of
I rarely take the boat out of gear and use it to help the angler keep the line tight. Slack in the line equals thrown hooks. When I get a strike on a lure I give the boat some more revs to help clear the fish out of the spread and drive the hook home. Otherwise use the boat to keep the line short and try changing angles if the fish goes deep and stubbornly hangs in the current.

Thanks mate. The line was straight back toward the spread initially but by the time he came out of the water he had created a massive 90 degree bend in the line, most of which was under the water and was still peeling off line.
