Family Values
Sometimes we as anglers can get caught up in the competitive nature that goes hand in hand with fishing, and this is quite justified. I mean who doesn’t want to catch the show stopper, the fish of fish, the trophy? However, by constantly chasing the biggest and the best we can lose sight of other aspects of fishing that can be equally as enjoyable and more abundant.
Teaching a young person to fish is a responsibility all in its self. Concepts such as why that fish didn’t hook up, why did the fish stop biting and “why can’t I take this dead stinky crab home for mum” are hard for a young person to grasp.
My daughter Charlie has been on to me for a while now to take her fishing, and I have a few times. She still hasn’t stopped telling the tale of how she caught more fish than me last time we went out. So I cracked. We packed her small k-mart rod, some tiny hooks, some pillies and the old mans fly gear (I’m not completely selfless), and headed down to one of my favourite nursery type locations. It was a lot of fun. With a bit of burly in the water there were plenty of small fish to keep us entertained. Charlie caught a few nice little finger mark, but as a school of ‘Goldens’ swam past I had to tell her to please move aside as there was work to be done. A hook up and a ten minute fight ended in devastation as the hook pulled as I was trying to land him. A few more fingermark’s for Charlie and a small cod for me and our day was done. No show stoppers, no trophy fish but one of the most fun fishing sessions I have had, simply teaching my daughter the wonders of fishing.

I live with fear every day... sometimes she lets me go fishing.

The best trips of all
Those sorts of days are the best days it's not all about catching them yourself, My daughters have all grown up and got past it and gone there own ways now but my 4 grandsons will be coming on line soon pardon the pun! the oldest is only 2 and the youngest 12 months so a bit young yet but I'm looking forward to when they can come with me.

Great article Webby.
Though my daughter is only 13 weeks, I look forward to the time in a few years when I can take her out fishing.

And go Charly. Great work from the youngster.
Nothign I love better than taking my youngest daughter fishing. She is now 16 and has been fishing with me since she was about 3yo.

I have two fishing daughters too
Mine are 6 and 4, and love coming fishing (the older one especially) in the boat. But their definition of fishing is broad. They consider being in the boat, watching others fish, is fishing too. They brag about what fish "they" caught - meaning watching as someone (dad, mum or grandad usually) caught a fish on their rod. Dad and mum have learnt that they have to fish with the girls rods, so that girls can claim the fish accordingly! The girls get enormous pleasure out of looking at the fish in the esky, waiting for the dolphins to appear for a feed (Cockburn Sound), or visiting the islands to see the seals or penguins. It is an absolute joy to me that they enjoy what I love so much - being on a boat, on the water, in the great outdoors, catching the occasional fish!

This is what it's all about for me.....
No big boat or no big sleepovers in the hills. It's all about 4 hour sesions with my dog and now.. I have my G'daughter who is 5 demanding to come fishing. My wife is getting close after an op to come along so it just gets better...I bought her a pink Okuna combo in support of breast canser. So far she has cast lead into the bushes and I feel now she is ready to point the rod in a westerly direction.
The up side of all of this of course is that I gather brownie points for me and the dog to head off for weekend of SERIOUS fishing... LOL

Amen
Could not agree more. We have to fish so that our kids can fish.

Good story Webby
yes I can remember going fishing with my father off of Golden Bay, the harbour in Freo, loved it, just sitting there with Dad is the best memories, talking, fishing, watching other fisheries. Your daughters will always remember fishing with dad, I still have very fond memories and still can see them as clear as a bell and I'm now 61yrs, I'd only wish Dad was alive when I met Bob, could see them both of fishing in the boat.
