Finally a trip out
With the weather forecast looking good for Monday, it was a last minute decision to get out for a fish.
The decision was to get up real early and hit the water by around 5:30.. We got down to the ramp to find several boats already out but the forecast wasnt what it was suposed to be.
The plan was to head out to one of Matt's spots for a bit of a jig as we had never done this before. First drift was showing a few fish on the bottom so we set up to give it a go. First time for me so wasnt too sure what to do so just followed Matt's lead. After a couple of sets of jigs i was onto my first fish
Altho it wasnt a huge fish , it was my first on a jig and my first amberjack. i estimate it to be around the 5kg mark
Things went quiet on that spot so we moved out to another not too far out. This spot was showing a fair amount of fish on the bottom. So we thought we would give it a go. With the first couple of drifts with nothing taking interest we were about to give up and go for a bottom bash but we tried again, this time there was a bit of a show. First one to hook up was Matt, the fish gave a blistering run and then he got a bit of line back but the fish didnt want to play fair and went for another run that couldnt be stopped. When we thought the hook had pulled and retrieved the jig to find that the hook had snapped off at the split ring, so that was 1 nill to the fish. Second run that we got was by me, the jig hit the bottom, jigged it up and wound the line and on the second jig i got hit but this fish gave a good pull and took me onto some reef and was never to see the jig again.Thats 2 nill to the fish on this spot. Another drift was set up , this time myself and our son Brenden both got hit, this time we think it was sharks as there was no run to realy speak of, just a hard pull and the jigs were gone.. thats 4 nill to the fish.
We tried for a bit longer out there but nothing was interested so we moved into shallower ground for a bottom bash. With the wind blowing fairly strong and the current going the same way we couldnt even hold bottom with a 32oz sinker but i still managed to get a 46cm solid b/bum. Nothing else out there apart from a couple of pickers.
We moved in again to another shallower spot, with the first drift out of the way we went back for another, only ending with a couple of sea sweep to show for it. I got 2 both were caught by Till's method, jagging them :). and Mat got 1. As we were about to give up and go in for the day , i hooked up but wasnt sure what it was. After a bit of a fight a nice solid KG of 49 cm broke the surface. Then all of a sudden Sandy's line took off. She tackled this fish for a couple of minutes with no luck she handed the rod over to Matt. After a good fight a Sambo of around the 8kg mark came to the surface. (no pics). WE had another couple of drifts but no luck this time. As it was getting late , we headed in to the ramp.
End result was Matt, two big bust off's and a sa sweep. Myself 1 Ambo,1B/Bum, 1KG and 2 sweep, Brenden NILL. Sandy/Matt 1 Sambo.
It was a great day out and a big thanks goes out to Matt for the day out and introducing me to the pain of jigging, (still sore) cheers mate, hopefully do it all again soon but with a bit more luck
Here is my catch for the day , and yes i finally out fished Sandy

sambo's arent bad eating
sambo's arent bad eating either . you just got to be careful as some of them have worms in them, if so you dont want to eat them. only prob is you wont know if they have worms until you fillet them up

worked hard for the fish, with them not on the bite, more than likely from the sharks, and then when you did hook up you had to keep it from the sharks getting them.
was a nice day on the water, even though the weather didnt match the forecast,
got a feed and had a great time, looking forward to doing it again guys
