What did you expect when
What did you expect when pollies make decisions on areas they're not technically skilled for
Yes Turnbull had some ownership of Oz-Email but in a financial capacity not an infrastructure/technical role
I do work in the industry and basically all of us saw the liberal change to Fibre to the Node (Using Copper) for what it is - Less scalable, Less reliable, Slower speeds and is truly the definition of a waste of money that they claimed the original NBN to be
The original NBN is expensive but it was fibre to the house and scalable.
They claimed it'd be obsolete by the time it was installed and I can also tell you this is bullshit
The backend equipment is very scalable as you have the fibre infrastructure already in place whereas copper is limited

Not having a go at you Peter, i'm having a go at the liberals for a botched change to the plans
To be clear, i'd also attack labor if they did the same thing in reverse

Labor fucked me by not
Labor fucked me by not mandating that all new developments built after the NBN announcement had to have NBN. I built in 2009 and ended up with ADSL1 because Telstra refused to install anything more than a basic phone line because NBN would eventually come. Too busy installing pink bats and building music halls that schools didn't want.
So far I've paid $2,520 for a phone line I've never used and now that another 7 or 8 estates have all been built around me since then, all off the same infrastructure, the internet is now so bad I have to reset my modem 7 times a day.

Same boat as you, the only
Same boat as you, the only shining beacon was that the RIM was upgraded to ADSL2 and the copper being short and new, I get a good service
Having said that there's no future plan for NBN in my suburb but a development down the road 6 months after I built did get proper NBN so try and make sense of that

I had the nbn hooked up here when we moved in, sometimes it's rooted and slow and some days it's good. Downloaded a program today, 585Mb in about 4 and a half minutes, thought was pretty good for a change.

Our area is getting done now
Telstra said the phone line would be down for wed/thur last week. STILL NO FARKING PHONE LINE!
Have been checking the telstra site for when its finishing and its gone from a 2 day disconnection to 7 days today. WTF?
Try running a buisness from home with no phone/email connection these days hahaha. Out of the city and away = great , in city = not so great.
Supposed to be FTTP so should be worth the wait.

NBN has been asaga at ourt
NBN has been asaga at our place since oct 10th
telstra contacted us around the 15th sept to advise the old adsl would be cut off on the 10th oct ,they sent out a new modem , and told me they would call us a few days out from the 10th to make sure we where ready for the swap over........on the 10th at about 4 pm my wife tells me we have no internet ?? ah yes the penny drops we have been cut off from adsl , no call no reminder ....ok , no probs , il, set up the new modem
set up the new modem , 30 mins later still no internet .... ok , maybe its the old cable .quick trip to jaycar , to replace that ?? nah , still wont work .no green lights on modem , call telstra ..... 90 mins later after being forced to go through the phillipines trouble shooting schedule , still no internet, they got me to connect direct to our phone jack with the new modem , remove all cables other than the short direct phone jack connection , yes it worked , then after 1 hour it stopped ?? called them again ..... got me to reset the modem , with pen , kid you not .........wait another 15 mins , re try to connect .nah nothing .ok they then tell me my modem is a dud and they will send anew one
..... 5 days later it arrives .... so no internet for a full week at home ....... ok try the new one ....in the mean while i decided to just use the wireless card in the home computer , on wifi same as the lappys ......get rid of all no esentila cables ok it worked .....all good ......3 days later .....no internet again..... called telstra .... ok lets go through the full phillipines check schedule again ....me with some girls , who kept putting me on hold while she talked with the technician ........then talk back to me to relay his advice !!!!
1 hour later nah , modem is adud again .but all good she says in her perfect english .. we will send you another ?? 2 days later we got anew modem .....ok , set it up again.....and it worked ..........then 1 day later another modem arrived ?? wtf ??
anyway given our track record i kept it as a spare .......... week later we had the power go off for afew hours in bunbury ....when it came back on the internet was down ........yep you guessed it more time chatting to me bestys in the philpines .another lost hour ...finally they advised it had fused the modem .... as i had no fuse protection on it ??
but wait all is ok we will send you another modem ?? and they did ....2 more again in fact arrived by star track parcel delivery lol
so now we have it working , however due to the house being wired up by telstra back in the 80s from the house to the local connection point is all copper, then fibre .so we dont get the top speed .it is faster , but not what they advised
however im not really fussed about that , so long as it friggin works ........so far so go .adn iv got back up modems lol
so now we are on modem heaven .with spares to burn which iv kept just in case .......

Never had good experience
Never had good experience dealing with Telstra. Called once spoke on the phone for 1.5 hrs.
Next day call again, same problem, gotta repeat the whole story, 2 hours later and taken down the operator's name, was assured I can quote my name and address and all the records will be there.
True enough few days later, gotta repeat the same shit over. Because they don't keep any records whatsoever !
My old place could only go through Telstra and not other ISP..stuck with them with ripped off prices for 2 years@!

Ours was a joke at the start. Their 'technician' came around and installed the modem and hooked in all the cabling telling the missus all good to go. Errr no no internet, after 3 or 4 calls we had them scratching their heads wondering why. Well it had to do with cable their 'technician' supplied and installed , it was the wrong kind. That took a week btw to sort. It does go alright though.

I also used to work in the industry and if you have fibre to premises then you will not have many issues. However the botched idea of fibre to the node still leaves aging copper, flooded pits, gel joints and the same problems we have all had with ADSL.
Lucky my new place has FTTP and it has been trouble free every since install 18 months ago.

Telstra modem = cheap crap
Apart from Telstra modem being pretty ordinary I have had a good run. Got NBN fibre to the house (early installation when they were still doing it). Had a list of things that had to be done by the installer before he left. Got the alarm monitoring working (many said it couldn't be done) and installed where I wanted it - not where they were going to put it. Made a point of telling the Mrs to not let him go until everything worked and was tested.
Getting 100/40 speeds and 500Gb for $90 a month - cost me 2 hours of debate with Telstra sales over the phone but worth it. Advised Telstra of other company deals and how easy it is to swap over.

I wouldn't expect the nbn to
I wouldn't expect the nbn to get any better anytime soon. My old man lives in Sydney & has had the nbn through Telstra for a fair while now. He reckons it hardly ever works & when it does it's slower than adsl 2 anyway. After two years of little or no service at home & on his mobile he has finally told Telstra where they can stick it. Most over rated bit of bs ever.

After living with an iinet connection that max'd at 2mbs but averaged around 1, I changed over to Red Broadband. Connection goes from around 5-13mbs. Really temperamental but faster than iinet, and no NBN for three years for us.

Got ours on 4 months back.
Cable people who turned up were hopeless, maybe first day on the job and only about 18 or 19
Couldnt answer the most basic questions on the layout so I sent them off and put it all in myself
Different people came back for the connection.
Signed up for 25mbps connection and speed test shows 24 download and about 5 upload.

Hanging back on it.
It's been live in Kalbarri for a few months now, lots of horror stories. I really don't expect much by way of speed as we are around 700 metres from the node ( FTTN) , but we have an existing service which is Ok for our needs. I certainly don't spend my life sitting around watching TV, and after watching foxtel in mining camps for years know it's mostly garbage, with more and more ads all the time. So not really fussed, just know we will have to go over eventually.
As part of the recent home renos, I downloaded the full NBN installers guide to see what was required down the track, and built in conduit to where I want the NCD and where they will most likely mount the external utilities box. Does anyone know if they replace the copper from the street pit to the premises with Cat 5e ( or whatever) if you are FTTN, or just leave the old telstra hard sheathed in? Existing conduit appears to be in good nick, can easily move existing cable back and forward.

Yep absolute crap but that
Yep absolute crap but that is what you will get with FTTN. And Ranmar with FTTN they leave the copper all the way from the node to your NBN box in the garage or wherever you have it located. The only bits of cat5 you will see are what is in your own house.
The only thing FTTN does is reduce (???) the length of copper cable between you and the network. Takes away all the people that have been 3km from the exchange and getting 3mbps. FTTP is the only way this should have been done in cities and towns.

There is a new initiative out
Called Fibre to the curb (FTTC, I think) Read about it the other day, scheduled to be rolled out where the FTTN has connections more than 1 k from the Node. So I guess I won't see that either. Or maybe, depending how you read the article. They are installing a converter on the street pit, connected to your existing copper.. See if I can find a link. Here. www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/11/nbns-fibre-to-the-curb-is-a-step-closer-to-being-built/ and this www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/10/forget-fibre-nbn-is-just-making-copper-faster-instead/ Why couldn't we just, if they are going to run fibre past the house with FTTC, then pay a premium to have fibre to the premises if we wanted the speed? Many people don't need/don't want all the speed that fibre promises. This was always my original gripe with Labours " grand vision and to hell with the expense" NBN FTTP plan. If you want it personally, pay for it--don't saddle the next three generations with the debt.

Next door's was done today.
Next door's was done today. Just the local Telstra Tech. Quizzed him, all they do up here with FTTN is go to the first point within the premises and plug in the modem. So my prep work isn't really wasted__ I got him to come over when he was done after I told him I had my Master Cablers ticket, he gave me a Telstra junction box and an outlet, I'll run some 5 e from there to where I want the modem and he can reconnect when he comes for the installation visit.
I hadn't done a speed test for years, so did the one from the Telstra website a few times, different times of day, testing around 12.2/.9. The Tech confirmed my suspicions about the high complaint rate up here__nbn won't work if the modem is still in its box
