First boat
Hi All,
Have read through many threads and ready to ask for more specific advice related to my particular situation. My wife is not at all keen for me to purchase a boat, my first. However, I am super keen to invest for all sorts of reasons and will continue to look into this. Have a couple of boys (3 and 5) who love getting out on a boat. I head out wide on mate's boats (dhus, baldies etc) and close (whiting, flathead etc) when I can borrow an uncle's boat (crays last season too) and have used this over the last couple of years. I dive as well and free dive for crabs in the river, loving the whole 'hunter gatherer' thing as well as sporting aspect of it. I'm looking forward to setting out on my own, when conditions and finances allow, and getting my own tub.
So, main points.
1. Looking for a boat between $10 - $17k, ali or glass, possibly with cuddy for shade for the boys
2. Should I go dealer or private?
3. With the little guys, not able to do all day fishing all the time - compromise?
4. Hoping for min 4.75m max 6.5m due to driveway space.
5. Would love to take it to Rotto and depending on conditions.
Thoughts, advice, criticisms welcome.
Thanks

bowrider
Hi Budhardock if your looking for a boat that will suit the family needs as well as fish maybe have a look at bowrider style boat quintrex and trailcraft make some that are quite popular. Cuddys are great for small families but you would definately want one over 5 m to have any kind of deck space
Just check your length overall for your driveway. To give you and idea my old 4.75 quintrex on the trailor measuerd about 6m in total length with the motor on the back and the drawbar.
Private or commercial sale each have their pro's and cons. Private can get a better deal expect to pay at least 3k more in that price range from a commercial dealer but you may get some sort of warranty

More deck less cabin
Know way too many who have gone down the kids compromise thing only to realise the wife and kids only come out a few times a year on glamour days. That 5.2 genesis is a good start. Plate gives a bit of safety margin when learning to drive and retrieve. If you find the boat your happy with private or dealer won't matter much, just dealer should be a bit more piece of mind but a private boat with service receipts should be sweet

dealer or private
dealers do not normally give warranty on s/h boats and if they do you will pay heaps more than no warranty boats..It doesnt really matter who you buy from, just make sure its a reputable brand and if you dont know much about boats, get an independant inspection done.

I have a 5.2m glass cuddy
I have a 5.2m glass cuddy cabin. I love it, and i'm not selling it.
But my advice is I probably should have either
a) got a bigger boat
b) got a runabout instead of a cuddy cab.
c) got a 4 stroke engine
Reason being, a 5.2 with a cuddy cab doesnt leave a lot of deck space for more than 2 people. a 6m boat would be fine though. A runabout will give you the larger usable deck space in a smaller tub.
Definitely look to get a 4 stroke. with kids and the mrs on board, a 2 stroke will put them right off (particularly the mrs). They are loud, smelly, and thirsty. You cannot have a conversation while cruising along, at idle they stink and are noisy, and not only do you need to put fuel in, but you also need to buy oil for it every 2nd tank full. Cheaper to buy, but more expensive to run.
If launching yourself ali will be easier, and you can get away with a smaller HP motor as it weighs less. down side is if the wind picks up it will be very uncomfortable.
For a rotto trip, i'd try not to go smaller than 5.2m. With family on board, really 5.5m minimum just in case the weather changes. Also, if doing rotto and fishing around the island, you'll want at least 100L fuel (mostly as back up). I've got a 90L tank, and to go out past rotto and fish a few spots I'm really pushing it and would really need to bring a few jerry cans with me to continue on all day.

my advise
My advise would be to stay away from any ally runabout, days without any chop are very rare around the southern half of the state and you will get smashed standing so far foward

Thanks for the advice guys.
Currently looking at a quintrex bayhunter caprice. It comes in around budget with hopefully some extra to cover insurance and extra bits and pieces. Passed on the bowrider idea (my wife did anyway). She thought it was a waste of deck space and with a bench seat at the back, somewhere for the boys to sit. I'm well aware of the comfort and lack of it on choppier days but see this as a good starter boat. Also have to consider weight as our big car would be fine, but the little one would struggle with bigger and heavier glass.
If I took something this size to Rotto, I'd pick my days, make sure I had plenty of fuel and leave the wife and kids at home or get them to catch the ferry.
I'd love the genesis but that may have to be the upgrade after I fill this one with fish... Hope to post soon with a new boat.
Thanks again.

don't do it. Well at least
don't do it. Well at least don't do it without giving it a real world test. Get out behind garden island in a 10-15kt day and see if you can bare the banging and spray. Save your pennies and go bigger and heavier.
I don't get the popularity of quinnies....I think they are very average.

think again about a bow rider style boat YOU will be pulling the pick and with a bow rider style boat you can get all the way to the bow with out having to laen through a wind screen the boys at Rockingham marine have my old 5.3 meter stacer for sale (I traded it on my latest) just over a hundred hours with a 90 optimax and all the fruit they want 27k but I recon you could knock them down also has an ali trailer

I am one of those people who buys a boat and then realises its too small. Make sure you buy a size and are happy with it so you don't buy and sell as often as i do!

price
That 2nd one is a shitload better foronly a couple ok grand more and its actually bigger + 4stroke
It really surprises me when a few months ago I was selling my old boat which was a 4.75 bayhunter. To give you an idea it was not quite as good as the caprice in Bruces link but heaps better than the first one and I couldnt move it for $10.5k so I put it into a yard on consignment and they sold it as a cash sale for 13K within 4 weeks. Someone could have saved themselves alot of money buying private.
As for rotto the bay hunters are great boats for their size but I would be buying bigger if Rotto is where you want to be regularly

5.2m Genesis
Wow. Had a look at the Genesis in the for sale section, that would be an awesome rig.
Wish I could stretch for that.

Thanks for the replies.
Pretty excited. Ended up buying a 475 Bayhunter Caprice in excellent condition with a Mercury 60hp 2 stroke Bigfoot, wasn't one of the ones in the links posted above. Maiden voyage went well on the canals in Mandurah, wife and kids loved it. Will post photos soon, looking forward to getting some fish on board.
Should be a great starter boat, easy to launch solo, easy to tow and some good deck space for fishing.
Have to get a few things to finish it all off. Safety first, EPIRB, marine radio, offshore flare kit and looking to make/piece together a live bait well/bucket to strap on the back.
The genesis with a four stroke, or even a four stroke to add to this boat is starting to form the plan for upgrading.

pretty capable boats for there size, 60hp should move it well, mine did 23knots WOT with an old 40hp on the back. reasolnable amount of deckspace for a boat of that size too
