First Mulloway

Caught my first Mulloway a few nights ago, at Bunker Bay... although it was a relative tiddler - didn't have my tape measure with me, but estimated at between 40-45cm.  Obviously was released to fight another day!

However, within the space of 30 mins I hooked up what I believe to be the same fish 3 times!  I've enclosed some pics (apologies for the poor quality - took them with my phone and wasn't well prepared!).  Has this ever happened to anyone else?  Thinking the second hook-up (top photo) looked a bit fatter than the others, but maybe this was on account of swallowing a couple of my mullies!? Obviously all three hook-ups were around the same size!  Annoying I didn't have my measure on me... otherwise I could have avoided any ambiguity!

...you got on to a school of 'em. Last time I dived the Swan wreck (not too far from there) there was a big school right under the rudder, all the same size.

Anyway, well done...about the size of MY first one, too!

School of Mullas

I'm with Aus. A few years back was snorkelling a gutter off Singleton beach and was following a school of Mullas around. School was made up of about 40 ish fish. A few 60/70cm ones were always at the front followed by all different sizes down to about maybe 30cm models. Was really cool to follow them around.

Nice work

Yeah, the more I look at the pictures, I think you boys are right...  They're all the same size roughly, but they do look slightly different.  Was obviously dark when I pulled them out, so couldn't really tell.  Would imagine they'd have been spooked right after being hauled to shore and wouldn't just immediately grab the first thing they saw after being put back.

They were sitting in a deep gutter, right next to some reef, only 10m from the shore.  All of them took the mullies exactly the same way... a couple of large taps, then they grabbed the bait and ran...

Nice work bud, only get bigger from here. At that size they sqim in schools as mentioned above of similar size fish. They sure are aggressive little things and no picking up, spitting out, and messing with baits like the larger ones.
