Fish 0, Reds 2

Hi guys

Headed out yesterday with my son for a fish and a dive. Hit the ramp at 7.00am and headed out thru The Cut to a couple of spots that had produced fish in the past. Not much happening at the first spot, although there was some action on the Furuno. Was getting bites but nothing hooking up, and the sounder looked like a school of fish just off the bottom.

After moving on, he hooked up to something that seemed reasonable...unfortunately it was an undersized pinkie so it went back ok on the weight. This followed shortly afterwards by another...then an undersized flattie, which also went back.

Around 11 we decided to head inshore for a dive...on the way in, we caught sight of a boat steaming towards us at a great rate of knots....first guess was Fisheries, but it turned out to be the boys in blue. After a quick chat and a show of the necessary safety gear, etc. we were on our way.

First dive was on some nice ground but we only saw a couple of kackas in the ledges, so we moved onto the spot from last weekend. Less crays this week, but still heaps of kackas...managed to bag 2 nice reds, but lost a white as it did a runner when I opened up the catch bag....I hate that...and it's the second time in 2 dives I've done it

Back in by 3pm and it was fresh crays on the bbq with garlic butter...tasted just fine.

Hope the weather holds out over Christmas/New Year break....but I'm not holding my breath....this week is looking a bit sh*tty.

regards

Only remembered after I took the photos and was preparing them for the bbq. Usually do it when we gauge them....thanks for the reminder.

Catchbag

Mon, 2011-12-19 20:36

Thanks Till

I've tracked down a dive shop in Rockingham that stocks the Pozi catchbags so I'll get myself one during the week. Hopefully I'll be able to hang on to more crays in future.

They're pretty interesting

Mon, 2011-12-19 20:53

They're pretty interesting and take a little bit of getting used to, but seem pretty good.

I've had feedback from other divers that they cause too much in-water drag, but maybe thats better than losing crays?

I have had a few cray bags fall apart on me over the years, the land and sea ones notably. The regular genesis ones seem very durable and reliable.

Make sure you also buy yourself one of these clips too. You can put it around the bag's frame, and then use it to clip the catch bag off on your BCD, or for tight caves, clip it off on some kelp outside, or onto a mermaid line.

Lots of guys put the clip on their jackets, it limits the utility.

Catchbag clip

Mon, 2011-12-19 21:36

I was wondering whether they came with a clip or it was an 'accessory'....my dive buddy from a couple of weeks ago had such a bag with a similar clip and he was weighed down because of all the crays he'd caught!

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
