I would not have thought grain could pose a risk to a marine environment. However, depending what form the canola entered the water could potentially explain the deaths.
Potentially, if it were in the form of dust it could have entered the water column as a concentrated plume, hence effecting the gills. Just think about if you were breathing in an environment of concentrated dust, you would find it very difficult to breath.
Similarly, if it entered the water as a grain it may have swelled and burst causing a similar plume.
Only a theory, but should be able to net a school of blowies in Wanbro Sound, and place them in a tank full of canola and see what happens.
I must admit that I hadn't thought about the grain too much though thinking about it. what happens when you put in too much fish food into a tank? It rots and the water fills up with algee. Algee needs oxygen and over time there is no more oxygen and the fish die.
If it was that incident that caused this then surely the scientists, fisheries and the environmental experts would know what to look for and would have nailed them by now ?
It's seems to be something "Out of the ordinary" which is why everyone is baffled as to what is causing this and don't know where to look.!
To me it is leaning towards something going on with the navy which is why it has been dealt with the way it has !!
Our fees are going to a good cause no doubt about that. Its either not as easy to determine as we think it is or government organisations have put a hold on info release or proper testing of both water and fish. But im sure fisheries wouldn't be letting it slide not after all the work they have done for this fishery in the past, it is a bigger slap in the face for them as it is you and i, i think.

Pretty sure they are waiting
Pretty sure they are waiting for someone to prove it was them, or more so 'that' which caused the deaths.
It was widely reported when it first happened, with photos.
