Yes your right it is poor form to keep any fish that you don't know what it is.i received the photo as a text and never have seen one was curios as to what it was so if I ever get one I can identify the fish.thanks for your input although it did not answer my question and only caused others to jump on your band wagon and attack me personally when I haven't done anything wrong. Keep up the good work guys
they certainly look very similar to those morwongs that you find north quite often swimming with the gold spots- i think people call them grey morwong/ sand snapper
my mate keeps and eats morwongs (grey, red lip etc) and gold spots......he reckoned they are ok but then again he would eat just about anything.
Once some pretty european backpackers at the caravan park wanted fish so we speared then filleted them a few grey morwongs!... never saw them again... in hindsight we should have given them something nicer
Stilly and Andy_b, that's not really fair guys. Most users on here display a healthy fishing attitude towards conservation of fish, and to post a pic of a fish with its throat cut seeking an id is asking for shit to be thrown. It's not like it's the first time this has happened either, so if guys want to avoid shit being thrown, they need to include more information other than a pic of an unidentified fish with its throat cut.
I may have come across a little attacking, and maybe to an extent I was. as AlwaysFishin said, a little more info in the title and it all would have been avoided.
what I got out of it was - a "mate" caught this fish, and WE couldn't figure out what it was but decided to kill it anyway.
Looking through Fishwreckapedia can sometimes take AGES, especially if you don't know what category to look through in the first place. So i do understand people putting up pics of fish that they don't know. I do enjoy reading this part of the forum too, getting to see some unusual captures, and learning more about fish myself.
But I can say, I never keep a fish when I don't know what it is. Just like I would never keep an undersize fish, even if under by only 1mm.
Rules are in place for a reason, to keep OUR fishery sustainable so our children for generations to come can enjoy the past time that we all love.
Its easy fixed, by a book like "Sea Fishes of Southern Australia" by Barry Hutchins and Roger Swainston and read through it or better still, take it with you.
The guys are trying to educate by informing people not to keep fish that they dont know what it is, unfortunately a good message is lost with the rage because its something that is seen all too often. Both parties can learn something here, one group to not keep fish when they dont know what it is, and the members having a go just to chill out and use the opportunity to educate people rather than fire them up. In this case everyone can benefit, we just need to take a bit longer to ensure the message is delivered with a bit more diplomacy.

can't help on the ID. but why oh why would you keep a fish you have no idea what it is?
It could be either
a) poisonous
b) undersized
c) protected
d) just taste like shit!
very frustrating to see.....

Related?
Are Gold spot sweetlips any relation to the morwong family? Looks to have some similarities. If they are morwong are not the best eating fish.

Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

Spot on, and or take 5mins to look through Fishwreckapedia.
Id hate to think how many times people have asked for the ID of a gold spot sweetlip.
