Once again...

Mon, 2010-04-05 21:05

...an unknown fish is caught, killed, and brought home despite having no idea what it is. Not having a go at you personally mate because it happens all the time with a bunch of different people. Kill it first and ask questions later, and I can't figure out why.

If it came up "without any damage" and you don't know if it's edible or not, why not take a pic and release it? A live fish is surely going to have more of its natural colours/appearance and be easier to identify anyway.

it looks edible tho

if its inedible - use it for bait - no harm done - wheres the issue mate ?

Ruby?

Mon, 2010-04-05 21:16

Will agree with juvenile Ruby. It is the only thing that comes close at the moment, still looking. The only other is long tail red snapper.... http://www.tuamotu-bluewater-spearfishing.com/id12.html

whats the issue?

Mon, 2010-04-05 22:27

If you didn't know what it is, fisheries pulls you over, they identify it and say its undersize and you say "im using it for bait......." There could be an issue there wopjrb........ Not having a go at you Bones, interesting capture for sure. What is the flesh like and what did it take?

So I'm guessing no one knows

Tue, 2010-04-06 06:19

So I'm guessing no one knows what it is?

Let's clarify a few things

  • no rules were broken.
  • I know my fish - but no idea on this (as it seems with the rest of us).
  • I'm with Wobrjb - even if I did get pulled up at ~650mm was in no danger of breaking any law. Last time I checked most of the deepwater species had no size limit and "tropical snapper" (closest thing perhaps, even though I'm metro?) were ~400mm. "Red Snapper" a tiny 300mm (of which I returned 2).
  • This fish doesn't seem to appear a Category 1 fish, or in fact anywhere in the Fisheries charts related to bag limit and sizes?
  • Nothing wrong with using fish caught for bait

Nice capture

Tue, 2010-04-06 09:52

Did you eat it, if so what did the taste buds think?

Nothing wrong with the capture in my opinion,

I wonder what they did years ago, "oooo I don't know what it is throw it back"? I don't think so, lets not be small minded about it.

Will give it a go tonight

Will give it a go tonight Decella... Try it on the wife first and see if she falls off the chair.

Thinking it's a flame snapper, so I presume it may be ok.

At worst can use the second one for bait - those dhu's love red skin.

Hi Paul, I hope Monica is still with us.

Looking at past pics that others have either posted here or are in magazines it would surprise me if the fish you caught were Ruby Snapper.

I think you are probably closer to the mark with the Flame Snapper.

Maybe it's a Flamin Ruby Snapper.
