I used to run a business in the states selling African cichlids and fw angelfish to pet stores....had about 30000+ liters of tanks going at one point.

I love keeping fish, but haven't had time/money to worry with it here.

I'm keen to see some pics as well!

Sat, 2009-02-28 22:47

Just ordered a 450litre tank+sump that will eventually be set up as a reef aquarium, cant wait to get it up and running, ive wanted one for ages.. gonna start with just fish and liverock but hope to one day fill it with multi coloured corals.

I will post photos as soon as ive gathered all the components and got it all running.

For anyone curious about setting up a marine aquarium check out oceanreefs in wangara, amazing place.

Barra

Sun, 2009-03-01 07:02

I've got a Barra named Dopey that I've had for nearly a year.  Started with three, but he was the most aggressive and as they grew, I released the other two.  Heres a clip I put together feeding them live prawns.

Meet Mollie and Belle

Sun, 2009-03-01 07:32

Our two ratbags. The story here is that they are both females bacause Wendy believed that the dog and I outnumbered her. At the fish shop she asked for 2 females. I winked at the poor sales assistant and whispered "humour her" and he did. These guys follow us everywhere around the room from their tank and are really cheeky little buggers.

Sun, 2009-03-01 18:44

Fishyink The barra is in a 4ft tank.  Not huge.  When I first got them they were about 12cm.  The one I have left is now about 25cm 11 months later.  I think the trick is not to feed them too much.  They have the potential to grow very quickly if you feed them a lot.  I got them at the local aquarium shop (Cairns), 3 for $15 so it's not a real big problem when he grows too big for the tank.

Nice Jack Doush!

Sat, 2009-06-27 10:20

Cool pics of the Barra Scuttlebutt.  Wait till he gets bigger and starts inhaling those things. Be nice to see when his back goes up and the stripe goes black on his back.

Then bang! faster than you can see.

Anyone have pics of natives in tanks? Surprised theres not more?

My daughters Oscars

Sat, 2010-08-21 13:49

since this photo was taken the tank collapsed and it was a mad frantic attempt to rescue the two oscars and one big shark, straight in the bath while they mopped up the water and got another big tank for them all, unfortunately the shark died bit the two oscars are fine and love  their fresh  liver for a treat and love a green pea or two, they had to put a glass top on as they play and nearly jump out of the tank, come up to the tank, love watching fish, so soothing.

I have

1 x 6 ft tank, coral reef with clown fish and moon wrasse

1 x 4 ft cichlid tank with geophagus, frontosa, green terror, big pleco cattie, electric blue, bolivian butterfly

1 x 4ft tank with Bessie the barra  (Bessie loves moths)

1 x 2 ft tank with geophagus braziliensis fingerlings (we had babies)

1 kiddies tank with siamese fighter

At my other house I have a 3 foot tank with a frontosa

thats macro algae! (seaweed), looked really good but eventually pulled it all out before it became too difficult.

pale ale

using a 4 yr old canon ixus 75, no expert!

dunno why its soo good at taking macro shots through glass/water,  all photos are straight from memory card

maybe try turning the flash off..  and just mess about with all the modes and settings till you find one that works

also take lots and lots of photos <---this makes the biggest difference for me

doesnt bother the fish or coral..inverts are a different story

25 hermit crabs that i put in there all vanished without a trace,  found the collector urchin split in half..  and around the tank theres various bits of smashed shell. its not that big either so wouldnt be suprised if theres another one lurking somewhere..

that blue thing is a clam mantle

Wed, 2010-09-01 16:19

Depending on the fish and where you put the tank/other details, might be hard to keep them alive with the temperatures and fluctuations. Most of the things would be stuff any marine tank needs like salinity, filtration, skimmers, etc. Also, I dont think whiting are very hardy so may be hard to get into your tank.

Though, as long as you kept the water quality right and the temperature right, were able to keep them alive and unstressed til you get them in the tank, then you should be able to keep them I would think. I know a few guys on MASA have non-tropical tanks, and I know you can keep fish that live in perth metro waters in a tank alive. Someone on this forum kept a gurnard for example. Bream seem pretty hardy and heard of them in tanks no problems (tackleshack had some). Would be pretty awesome having a school of whiting in a tank. Particularly one with subdued lighting for most of the tank.

Thu, 2010-09-02 06:56

years ago my mates brother used to have redfin and a longneck turtle hed caught in a massive freshwater tank.. only stocked with australian natives also had a mangrove jack and a small murray cod (i think). pretty much what inspired me to get one.

marc i dont think a pelagic fish like tailor would survive long in an aquarium due to the way they hunt, moving over large ares.. could be wrong.

u can buy port jacksons and rays.. any bought in perth would have also been collected in perth. They need really big tanks though.

Occy would be cool, being a predator it would eat anything else you put in the aquarium

mangrove jack is one fish i've always wanted for my tank, they look awesome when they start going red. they don't go well with to many other fish but.
