If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

20kg yellowfin tuna.
A friend gave me a Rapala CD Mag 14 as a gift...had never owned a lure of this type but had a rough idea what to do with it. So the very first time I ever attempted to troll the back edge of a reef (Jurien), up comes the YFT on really cheap 40 lb mono. Needless to say, I've probably done about 50 kms worth of trolling over that patch since then and no more tuna!

Probably the snapper in my avatar.. PB on light gear, heaps of fun!!
Hoping there will be many more fish to overtake that in the coming months. IMy most vivid fishing memory was of a black jew I dropped in darwin.. this thing would have been massive and I have never been so stretched fighting a fish. Good times!

Max
'Max' the Potato Cod off the Murion Islands.
On scuba in Aug '92, I was reaching under a ledge to get a cray with one hand, my other hand/arm just hanging back. This was grabbed up to my elbow by Max, who shook me about (he wanted my glove). Thinking shark, I turned, punching and pulling and see my dive buddies pissin themselves laughing. Max let go when he got my glove and I was left with deep cuts in the top of my hand. The scares are still there - so I remember the 'Max encounter' every day.
Cheers Pete

A queenie off Broome jetty
There I am on the Broome jetty, armed with my 14' surf rod and 489 Mitchell, baitcasting a ganged mulie, when a big queenie smashed it and took off parallel to the jetty, crossing people's lines as it went. He's me running down the jetty, surf rod in hand, winding like mad trying to make some ground on it. Eventually got it to the surface and as I'm lifting it up onto the jetty, some bloke tried to claim the fish as his. A 'local' stepped in and decided to settle the issue by finding out who's hooks were in it's mouth....mine, of course. The other bloke's hook was in it's side as a consequence of it crossing his line.
That was back in 1984 during a holiday stopover in Broome on our way to Darwin. It was my first queenie, my first big fish (previous best was big tailor from the beach) and a whole lot of fun. From what I remember, it tasted ok, too.
Last year in Coral Bay, we were trolling thru the rec zone (inside the reef) near the south passage when a 58cm spangled emperor nailed my pink $5 boat show lure. At first I thought I'd snagged some coral but as we stopped the boat, the little eggbeater was still screaming so we knew we had a fish. Great fight on light gear, great fun and fantastic eating. Not as big as the queenie but equally memorable for the excitement it provided.
Hoping to catch a nice demersal soon!
regards
