Fishing Albany

 hi everyone

We are looking at heading down to Albany for a few days during the ban so do a bit of south coast fishing. Have never been there before so hoping some of the FW locals have!

Chasing a bit of info on weather during October and early November, boat ramps, is the one near the port best to use with an 8m boat?

Are there places to hide from the weather in King George sound? And what's the fishing like?

Fishing out wide around the southern islands what's that like?

Are there things like King George in shallower? Much squid?

If we we out wider really looking to find some nannigui, as we have never really targeted them before.

Will also play in close to islands and exposed rocks and see if any yellow tail kings are about!

Any info from anyone who has been down that way would be greatly appreciated

Fishing Albany

 Hey Bodie

The answer to your questions is yes. You can also launch from Emu Point,  I prefer to use the town ramp.  If you have beach launching capabilities you have many beaches to launch from.

From what I've heard there are plenty of King George around, not so many squid but you will get a feed. Plenty of places to get out of the wind. Use the islands also.

Variety of species out wide just have to find the reef.

If you use the navionics web app before you come down to find roughly wherr the reef is you'll do fine.

 Hope this helps. Tight lines

Cheynes

Cheynes beach is good, but the caravan park owners are anal nazi fuckwits. Had a few run ins with them, and they don't seem to like fisherman too much, or even families for that matter. They prefer the wierdo bird watching groups. If you could find a house near there to rent or camp, you could beach launch there without too many dramas.

It it can get sloppy around some of the islands, depending which way the swell is from. You can get to 60-70m deep pretty quickly. Big blackarse are a welcome bonus.

I do have an 8m glass boat

I do have an 8m glass boat so beach launching is likely out of the question :-)

No mate.

No it's not. The sand down there is as hard as concrete. I've seen Commodores launching 6m Ali's at the Cheynes ramp, and ducatti's racing R1's on the main beach.

That's nice you have a 8m glass boat, but I've seen bigger than that launch  down there.

I beach launched my 7m ally

Sun, 2016-09-11 12:56

I beach launched my 7m ally at cosy corner last year. Great spot to sneak away for a few days when the ban is on. Limits a lot more generous too

 How'd you go fish wise

Sun, 2016-09-11 13:10

How'd you go fish wise dodgy? Did you need any recovery gear like mats etc to get out?

 Usually put a decent feed

Sun, 2016-09-11 18:03

Usually put a decent feed together in the bay if it's blowing around the corner. Drops of pretty quickly into the 50's and lots of ground to scout around. If it's not blowing it's not too far to head towards Denmark way. Some very good ground that doesn't get flogged hard.

I did use a couple of sheet of mesh under the trailer tyres. Trickiest bit was the little hill dropping from campground onto the beach. The beach itself is nice and firm.

We checked out the beach launch at Cheynes and yep, as Scotto said, it is hard sand. I recon OK for an 8m ali but a heavy glass boat may need the forbie to get a bit wet......

Yeah stuff that

I have been there and seen bodies boat try to be beach launched. 2 tractors and about 3 hours later and we eventually managed to drag the frame of the trailer out of the sand, that was without the boat even being on any more.

mainstream concrete Ramps all the way I reckon. But provided there is a concrete ramp in town, then it can't be that much worse to just do some extra travelling on the water.

Just launch at the town ramp

Sun, 2016-09-11 21:54

Just launch at the town ramp and you can get to anywhere you want. Just head out past the sound in either direction and plenty of good ground. I regularly head out in my 4.8m glass boat from town right down Cosy Corner way or Two Peoples Bay  as don't like beach launching on my own. Gotta watch out for breaking water round reefy areas even 50m coming up to 20m break occasionally in areas that maps say seldom breaks. The waters are way more unpredictable than metro and even on 2m swell predicted days expect 4m+  on occasions in certain areas. Its always sloppy like a washing machine as you head around either hedland left towards Two Peoples Bay or right past Bald Head plus when the swell hits the hedland /rocks the backwash also turns into big waves coming in the opposite direction. Plenty of awesome country to explore but you still have to work hard to find the fish, good luck.

 Thanks guys, Will be staying

Mon, 2016-09-12 11:43

 Thanks guys,

Will be staying around Albany and either launch from the town ramp or Emu point. Weather dependant I was looking to get out towards eclipse island if possible

If weather doesnt play ball looks like can find a side of King george sound to hide out of the wind, whats the fishing like in there? Assume right in close your a chance of King george and squid, are there any cliff type areas worth a fish for blue groper or Black ass or the like?

Would love to get out to some of these big 20-40m bombies and drop some jigs down on it! but obviously play it safe with the swell.

Cheynes and albany

Sat, 2016-09-17 08:49

Bodie I Have launched my 6.1 quintrex of Cheynes several times no probs. hard sand but may be a weed build up. Sometimes weed banks up in the bay so have to pick your path out. Weather is main prob at Cheynes if get average days gets riskyto go around to the Deeper water for fishing. Big swells on average days and little protection.

Fished Albany a lot in my boat and love this place. Great ramps in town and emu point both are well protected. Weather and swell is big factor fishing here. You will  get larger swells in this ocean and many days you see 2 to 3 m swell. Some days on what is reported as medium swell I have headed out to find deeper water and reef and the swell has been frightening so I have turned around and headed for safer fishing in the sound . Mate you will need good conditions to get around bald head and fish eclipse or beyond. It is done by the locals and I have done it a few times picking the right conditions to do it. Obviously a bigger boat will help but in this water on a bad day it will not make much difference. You will still be in a world of hurt.

watch the weather in Albany it is not like Perth. Winds are more unpredictable and weatherman often not right. If you are around the head (bald head) some distance from the protection of the sound and get a bad wind change you will be in dire straights coming back through the large swell sets or worse on a large following sea which will be unavoidable in parts to get back to safety.

Like Daniel said good country and interesting fishing plus a great sea search rescue service maintained by the volunteers 7 days a week but water weather and terrain has to be respected here.

Thanks for the info mate, good to know. will only be heading out wide if conditions are suitable.

Whats the bay like fishing wise in the event of average weather? Fairly protected, Much on the fish front?
