fishing around cairns ?

afternoon crew :)
ive got a oppertunity to head to cairns with work so im asking the obvious question .. whats the fishing like ??
i know its great for huge marlin out deep .. BUT .. is there anything in closer ?
having a 25 foot boat will help but im not going to be getting paid enough to go trolling the shelfs edge very often. im happy with sports fishing so macks, GT's, sails small marlin ?? anything like that ? ive tried to find info but all im finding in big marlin ..
any help would be great guys

Was up there a couple of years ago and was talking to local fisho. Apparently a lot of different fishing zones. But from what he said it's still pretty good fishing.

Yeah, familiarise yourself
Yeah, you'd love it. Familiarise yourself with the fishing & sanctuary zones first. The creeks are worth a shot for barra, queenies, grunter & jacks. Fishing further up stream & fishing the run off is good.
Locating reef is easy (get a map/consult your chart). Fishing 15m up to 30m will yield plenty of tasty reefies.
Keep a floater out that back at all times for spaniards.
Plenty of places to troll for spaniards.
Pop & flick plastics at the channel markers for big queenies & small GT's.
Haven't been there for a while, but it's a fisho's dream. Won't take you long to get into them if you head that way.
Oh, faaaark it's humid up there.

i cam back from cairns in june from a trip
was awsume locals were catching gts and all sorts of fish just of the local wharf as well
if i could move there i would loved it

Cairns fishing
Its a great place. I live 100km from cairns. alot of variety, trout in shallows, good reef fish in the deeper water. have never put enough work into trolling for bill fish but if you do you will go well. gt's in around the reefs, plenty of macks. moved here from perth 4 years ago and wont be going anywhere soon.

heaps of reef around Cairns
heaps of reef around Cairns but if you're feeling adventurous head up to Cooktown with the boat (the town is worth a visit even if you are just sight seeing). Heaps of reef and reds out from there, plus if the weather is good the Ribbon's are 30nm away.
Also, launching at Port Douglas or Yorkeys Knob are other options to launching in Trinity Inlet.
I've seen some big barra caught on livies in the hole at the junction of Trinity Inlet and Smiths Creek.
Regardless of the fishing, I like Cairns, you'll have a great time. It's worth going for a drive up into the tablelands, and there is a tackle store about 15km north of town on the Pt Douglas Road (on the right heading north) that has some great old historic photos and thing that is a must drop in.
