Fishing Bernier Island

G'day friends,

on our recent trip to Bernier island we had lots of fun catching your usual species pinks, cods and your pelagics behind the island.

The biggest problem we encountered was not sharks, the amount of golden trevally we landed.

Its good to catch a couple but then it becomes too tiring. Trust me they are f#$%kin hard work.

My question: Is this very common around this part of the world or just seasonal.

Also we went chasing reds and coral trout NW behind the island probably 8kms. we found some nice ground and my first drop produced a small red to 50cms and couple of amber jacks. Then same problem GT's invaded the spot.

So, are we fishing in the right ground or what can we do to avoid this teasers.

Also, if someone can put us in the right direction to find decent grounds for reds will be much appreciated. Not asking for spots just a general idea of the area. (Even happy to consider spot swapping)

Thanks in advance.

They have been in plague proportions this year, doesn't matter where you go the bloody things are there.

Quobba, Cape St Crique , Lady Joyous wreck, the Gap and inside or outside the islands the buggers are there.

I love them as a sportsfish. As soon as they turned up around the boat in dampier out came the light stuff and even the trusty 8wt Fly road with a clouser drifted down the current. Blast time!!

Aren't they meant to be pretty damn good on the tooth? My old man reckons they are pretty hard to beat beer battered and deep fried.

Your old man must have no taste buds or hasn't tried good eating fish.
Goldies are about 2 out of 6 on my taste scale, good for patties and that is about all.

Many years ago me and a mate were fishing up bush and were very hungry [ either piss or food ] when we managed to catch one off the Broome wharf. Cooked up a treat. Haha

Carnarvonite and Burnz I know you guys have a lot of knowledge about the area.

Can you please tell me how far roughly behind the island we need to start looking for reds?

Your advice will be much appreciated.

Islands

Anywhere from 1nm west of the islands, look for small patches of coral, if you don't see fish on the sounder keep moving until you do then anchor on top of your spot because if you drift on it you will pull the fish away and break up the school
