Fishing the five on wednesday
Hi everyone im adam new to fishwrecked,
Went out for a fish wednesday about 10am with my dad and uncle grant
headed out to the five at the south end of garden island, started our drift as we just passed it
seen alot of big bait schools but nothing realy chasing them, got a few nice sand whiting and a heap of small flathead on the light gear, and about 6 small scorpion cod, the fish died off a bit when grant picked up this nice flathead on the light gear
The wind died right off and werent realy drifting nor were the fish biting so headed back to the five by this time the wind picked up slightly in the other direction so we started the drift as we hit bank instantly started geting pecked of by wrass caught a few of them, also caught a small black ass and a nice skippy, but couldnt rely get away from the wrass, slowly drifting over it went dead again which i thought was good coz i didnt realy want to catch anymore wrass, not long after grant was on and pulled up this nice 4 kg dhue closly followed by a small hammer head so it was landed pretty fast
drifted a bit more grant was on again ended up losing a nice bronzy close to the boat, and no more action for 30mins or so where thinking of packing up when line started peeling off my line and i was on took a good 50 meters off me then short quick runs we were sure it was a shark until i got it close enough to see and we found it was a decent tuna to our suprise after a good 30 mins of circle work from the tuna we had landed the 14kg 1.06m monster me and grant 3 goes each i think its a long tail? thats the first tuna for me i was over the moon hi fives all round.
we decided to head in and this is mixed bag
This has got to be my best day fishing and the best fish ive caught.

Sounds like a pretty productive day. Is a long tail, and a great sized one at that too. Pretty big flattie for our waters. Wish I knew how to target those monsters (well, maybe not by eastern states standards)

Mate I could hazard a guess and say
Looks a little more like a yellow fin. At that size not all the fins and finlets are yellow. There is better Tuna experts on here and no doubt youll get a response.
Good mixed bag. Ill go the whiting thank you.

Just a question as to how you
Just a question as to how you setup your floater? Do you run it under a baloon or just a couple of snelled hooks with bait and no weight cast out under some slack line?

just two snelled hooks and a
just two snelled hooks and a small bean
while drifting depends on your drift speed and current to if you need a bigger or smaller weight or not one at all
and also the amount of line you let out will contribute to the depth of witch the bait will float
i have just strded using this rig as uncle grant has recently shown me
but it definatly paid off

Yep, nice northern bluefin (aka Longtail). Yellow fin much thicker. Bluefin still have yellow fins....confusing for sure!
Actally pretty good to eat the old Longtail, just dont overcook. Great size, and they go seriously hard!

Northern bluefin is a
Northern bluefin is a separate species (T. thynnus, or possibly T. orientalis) to the longtails (T. tonggol), and although tongtails can be called northern bluefin, it makes it pretty confusing to call them such, and not really accurate IMO. Longtail FTW :p.
Some people have told me there IS a northern bluefun in our waters, but I dont really give much weight to that...
Only had longtail once but didnt rate it that well. Had some YFT at the same time to compare to. Still recons SBT's are the best, but if it tastes good, it tastes good :D
A few tips for telling the difference: The overall bodyshape is a giveaway that its a longtail (not thick enough near the second dorsal for example). Second dorsal and anal fins are too long for a SBT and the pectorals look a little stubby for a YFT. A YFT will be stubbier through the body like a SBT and also at 14kg, it will be pretty obviously yellow most of the time (as opposed to tinges, which all tuna seem to have as John mentioned). The belly pattern if you can see it can quickly tell you if its a YFT or lontail. YFTs have long vertical stripes with vertical stripes of dots inbetween, while the longtails just have elongated dots. Though, you cant always see them, but if you see vertical lines on the midsection, its not a longtail (see pics for examples)

Tuna are difficult to ID at times
The NSW Gov. dept would appear to have got it wrong in the link below then.

Well, by some dumb reason,
Well, by some dumb reason, longtails are legally able to be called 'northern bluefin'. It confuses the two though (which are quite separate). Its like being able to refer to kangaroo meat as just steak :p
Theres a fair few examples of fish being called something different to obscure their actual nature by calling them something that will confuse them with a quite different fish.

well,
why dont you make a pie chart just to show us all then.
it was only a few weeks ago you were calling someones longtail a southern bluefin, and following up that with a "we dont get longtails in the metro area". and all of a sudden, your the tuna expert of the world?
it looks as though someone should probably be fishing the ocean, instead of the internet.

Perhaps I used it as an example to actually educate myself on the finer points of tuna identification so I would be completely sure from then on in, and then share said information with other people that will find it useful. I've never called myself an expert btw.
Maybe one day, you could try being useful Scotto? You might find it a refreshing change?

I think you will find
that Northern Bluefin Tuna was the "old" and incorrect name given to Longtail Tuna (thunnus tonggol). In fact my Guide to Fishes by E.M. Grant printed 1982 names Northern Bluefin Tuna as thunnus tonggol and offers no other names that this fish is known by. Longtail Tuna doesn't get a mention anywhere. There was obviously some confusion at the time with tuna species as there was with the numerous trevally species.

Hey hlokk just curious on
Hey hlokk just curious on what u do for a living? Im not having a go at u it's just that every time someone asks a simple question for example longtail or yft? u deliver a very informitive but sometimes very over the top essay on the subject. There's nothing wrong with doing some reaserch on a species but too know what u know or have read u must be a marine biologist or the likes. It does make me laugh though when I read what u know or pretend to know. If only there was a show called who wants to be a millionaire fisherman. I know who I'd call if I needed to phone a friend.
On another note well done Adam looks like u had a great day out it must of been a suprise when u got that tuna boatside nothing better than calling a shark and getting a tuna. Todays paper says there's a few yft behind ffb might be worth a troll on the way out Sunday.

I just make a lot of effort to research it, so if something like that pops up, I figure that it would be useful/interesting to some people who perhaps dont want to spend hours and hours to find the info. And after all, forums are all about sharing info ;)

Cracking tuna mate!
Cracking tuna mate!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
