Fishing licences

Has anyone seen the news tonight, they are saying that the government has backed down on the demersal licences. Instead just reducing the bag limit and leaving the boat licence in tact. Does anybody know if they are just making the licence for the boat owner or if everyone still has to get one who goes out on a boat? I think this is fantastic news, its not going to cost me the world just to go out fishing with the family for a day. HORAY!!!!

I agree gavo77. What a great result this looks like turning out to be. Rational democratic approaches and, inevitably, reduced quotas on endangered stocks. All credit goes to the ordinary person and I will not in any way discount the role for Recfishwest in all of this. The members in here have pushed the barrow in various ways and despite what some people would say, it's all about getting off your arse and doing what you can in anyway you can.

IMO opinion Norman Moore has some retrospective thinking to do. Maybe next time he will go out for public opinion before introducing a police state as this gov't seems to as a matter of policy.

I don't think anything is set in concrete yet....

From what I have heard is that someone else may fish on the boat under the skippers licence,BUT their catch goes against the skippers bag limit...

Will wait for the final decision,I think there will be trade-offs against the loss of the Demersal licence.

looking like the people had a win over the government for once. is it just the v5 that will have the bag reduced or is it going to be your personal bag limit dropping again?

The Western Australian Government is considering changes to fishing licence fees in a bid to placate angry recreational fishermen.

Recfishwest say the Government is considering scrapping a $150 licence fee for demersal fish along with the $30 licence fee for each person fishing from a boat.

But bag limits for vulnerable species, such as dhufish and pink snapper, will be cut to two per person, and people fishing from a boat without a licence will not be allowed to exceed the skipper's bag limit.

Recfishwest spokesman Frank Prokop says the proposal is a sensible compromise.

The Fisheries Minister, Norman Moore, says he is prepared to negotiate with recreational anglers on licence fees, but nothing has been decided.

Mr Moore says the number of fish being caught has to be reduced by 50 per cent to ensure the resource remains viable.

"We're trying to come up with a package that has the least amount of disadvantage to those people who have got a particular interest in fishing. To try to manage it in such a way that we don't put tackle shops out of business, we don't put coast community holiday houses out of business," he said.

I think the TV guys were doing their normal reporting

Read the West in the morning and add a bit of film to the story.

From what Norman Moore, Colin Barnett and the Recfishwest rep said yesterday, the final deal has yet to be thrashed out and probably won't be finalised until next week.

Is it just me, or do you

Is it just me, or do you reckon this was the government's strategy the whole time?  Set the bar as high as possible, let the public thrash it out, and then lower the bar some, and everybody says, 'Thank ye!'

If no one had raised a fuss, they would have been happy to rake in the dough, but they had to know people would.  I don't reckon polly's are as clueless as people make them out to be....least, not the ones I've met.  They can be pretty cagey.

So now they can tell the greens that they've made a real difference for the fish, and at the same time say to the fishos...'See, we listened to you, and have given in to some of your demands.' all in a day's work for a polly....

If you ever watched Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister that was certainly the sort of thing politicians get up to.

I hope the licence for boat fishing is for the boat

Thu, 2009-09-10 14:25

As a skipper I would love to be able to take someone out fishing on the spur of the moment, not having to then ask "have you got a licence". That would have been crap. If the boat is licenced it would be so much better, and I wouldnt care if the bag was recorded against me, as I never freeze fish and catch to eat fresh only.

Have people forgotten Labours policies already? Smile  4 months and more sanctuary zones.

This is why fishers shouldn't stop writing letters now but keep a barrage of mail going to state and federal.  Its the reason the governments have pressure for change both state and national.  They receive a barrage of mail and vocal pressure from conservation groups driven by anti-fishing Nazis in the background.

Look at the end of the line media wave heading through the non-fishing populace filled with guilt to donate to groups.

Expect this to be the lull before the storm if the correspondence subsides.

This is not the end, its just the beginning.
